Racked is reporting that the condo conversion at One Brooklyn Bridge Park (formerly 360 Furman Street, aka that Jehovah's Witness Building) might be scoring the ultimate in amenities (at least as we think of these things at Curbed)—Brooklyn's first Trader Joe's .

Since people donate less, they are operating on negative cash flow, so when they sell they will make millions.......

But, since cash low is negative, they will loose those too!!!!

I am not surprised that such residential buildings will be sold. The wts doesnt need them anymore. I do not think that the wts will completely get out of Brooklyn. Since most of the buildings connect via tunnels underground, I wonder if they decide to sell those, will one owner buy them.

NHK paid a million for the squibb back then. How much is it worth now? There are a bunch of offices there now and shops. Wonder if they will sell it.

The 58 was wilder than orange street, it was the pressman dorm , very spiritual, 200 proof. The BA era ended with the 76 Mayflower.

On the other hand, I think that the wts will sell brooklyn property.

Last Week’s Announcement of Six Buildings For Sale in Heights
May Have Prompted Rumors, Spokesperson Says
A rumor reported yesterday to the Brooklyn Eagle that Watchtower will not build the controversial four-tower development at 85 Jay St. in DUMBO is not true.

Richard Devine, a spokesperson for the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, also known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, denied there was any truth to the rumor.

The rumor was first printed on the blog Skycraper.com, in a summary of the 85 Jay project, as follows: “The Watchtower Society has decided not to build the complex, instead continuing the gradual transfer of its facilities to upstate New York.”

“Nothing has really changed regarding 85 Jay. The reported sale of the buildings may have prompted the rumor,” said Devine, referring to last week’s article in the Eagle containing the announcement that six Watchtower residential buildings in Brooklyn Heights were available for sale.

The society got its final go-ahead from the City Council in December 2004 for the Jay Street project. It is comprised of four towers — two nine story towers facing Front and Bridge Streets and two 20-story towers facing Jay and York Streets — to accommodate about 1,000 apartments, plus a large assembly hall and underground parking for an estimated 1,100 cars.

Local neighborhood organizations, the borough president and several City Council members opposed it because of its bulk, height, potential truck traffic and lack of street-level retail.

Devine said at the time that the religious organization had no specific development timetable in mind.

Currently, the 3-acre property is used by the society as a parking lot, needed to accommodate employee vehicles — particularly because the organization vacated its waterfont parking lot adjacent to Pier 5 (next to its former shipping complex at 360 Furman St.) and release it for Brooklyn Bridge Park development.

As a Big Landowner Plans to Sell, Mouths Begin to Water

By JAKE MOONEY Published: May 6, 2007 In the lobbies of some of the buildings near the Brooklyn waterfront owned by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, visitors can pick up plastic-wrapped packets of postcards depicting the organization’s various properties. On one, an aerial view of Brooklyn Heights, it seems as if nearly every third building is a Watchtower dormitory. Since 1909, the neighborhood has been home to Brooklyn Bethel, as the organization, whose members are known as Jehovah’s Witnesses, calls its world headquarters. Other postcards in the packet, though, tell a story of change: They show neatly dressed volunteers at work in a sprawling new complex north of the city in Wallkill, N.Y., where the Witnesses moved their Bible- and magazine-printing operations in 2004. Now, the residential buildings are beginning to go, too: The Witnesses plan to sell six of their Brooklyn Heights residences, including the venerable 12-story Standish Arms Hotel building, as part of what they are calling an organizational consolidation. With the printing presses gone and the former warehouse and shipping facility at 360 Furman Street sold, Witnesses spokesmen said, the organization needs less space for members to live. Besides the Standish Arms, at 169 Columbia Heights, between Clark and Pierrepont Streets, the buildings for sale include four-story and seven-story apartment buildings on the same street, and three 19th-century houses nearby. The offerings, which were reported in The Brooklyn Eagle, have Brooklyn Heights residents buzzing about the potential for the new properties hitting the real estate market. Residents are also speculating about the future of the former Bossert and Leverich Towers Hotels, two other meticulously restored buildings the organization owns in the neighborhood. When people hear that they’re selling the Standish Hotel, they start drooling about the Bossert,” Robert Perris, district manager of Brooklyn Community Board 2, said of the opulent tower at Montague and Hicks Streets, where the Brooklyn Dodgers celebrated their victory in the 1955 World Series. “The speculation runs rampant.” According to Richard Devine, a Watchtower spokesman, the organization is not working with an outside real estate agent and has no set asking prices, but it will evaluate offers as they come in, as it did with the sale of 360 Furman and three other buildings on Livingston, Hicks and Clark Streets that the organization recently sold. As for the other 24 buildings that Watchtower owns in the Heights and nearby Dumbo, the organization, as it often does, is keeping its plans close to the vest. “Currently we don’t have any plans to sell any more,” Mr. Devine said. “At least not at this time.” JAKE MOONEY
