I read this before on the net,The article really shows how black and white the Judges thinking was, not to different from a lot of fundies I'm afraid.

It seems that Rutherford thought of himself above the law of the land. What happened to Jesus' counsel about "rendering to Ceasar the things that are Ceasar's?" Prohibition may have been inconvenient for him. But did that give him the excuse to break the law of that time? No, Rutherford was a "law unto himself" in both his habits and manners.

Drinking is endemic among JW's. It is carefully hidden away and rationalized by individuals. I remember studying the for the Watchtower study with a ministerial servant and we would almost always drink 40 ounce beers afterward. I never drank more than when I was a JW. I guess it helps to deal with the repression.

Well I guess we can't fault the Judge too much on this one. I'm sure the years of prohibitions makes a strong case for not allowing the narrow minded to make laws for the rest of the population.
The "judge's" "bold" () outspokeness against the prohibition laws - in marked contrast to fundamentalists supporting the prohibition - is not a sign of broad-mindedness by any stretch of the imagination. Prohibition simply made it harder for the "judge" to get his steady supply of liquor and had nothing to do with speaking out against man-made laws that suppossedly violated God's law. In this regard, Rutherford was no different from the pompous and self-deluded Russell before him or the stream of bored megalomaniacs who followed him.
