Why in the world do JW's think it wrong to send a Mother's Day card?

My JW roommate always sends her Mom and Stepdad cards. I told her last night I was proud of her for doing that. She said she would do it until the day she died. Is Mother's day considered a pagan holiday like Christmas and Easter?

The JWs see pagan origins and influences everywhere so this may well be the reason why they are against celebrating Mother's day. They are isolationists they don't like to identify with the rest of society.

I guess I just don't see where sending your mother a card is considering worshipping her. It seems to just honor her...isn't that what we are suppose to do?

Yep. It's totally pagan as you can see from how it started:

"...Mother's Day as we know it in North America originated in the United States in 1907, but a Mother's Day has been celebrated by different cultures, from Ancient Greece to Rome, to America, for millennia...."

The Witnesses seize upon the notion that the ancient pagans practiced worship of mothers, (usually in the form of goddesses) and try using it as the reason why "mature Christians" shouldn't practice it today. Yet as per usual, they take something totally out of context to suit their own bizarre interpretations. Mother's Day as we know it started just over a century ago and has absolutely nothing to do with any pagan practices----it's simply a day to show your mother that she's loved and appreciated. How did it get started?

"...Anna Jarvis was a childless spinster who wanted to honor her mother, who had lost 7 of her 11 children but converted her sorrow into charitable works. When her mother died on May 9, 1905, Anna and the leaders of her church in Crafton, West Virginia, decided to hold the first Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May, 1907. Anna went on to relentlessly promote Mother's Day by writing over 10,000 letters to newspapers, business and church leaders and politicians. In 1910 the Governor of Virginia proclaimed it a state holiday, and in 1914 President Wilson made it a national holiday...."

Real pagan there eh? I always get my Dub mom a card and bouquet of flowers on Mothers Day. She always giggles "you shouldn't do that!" but loves it all the same. I remember asking an elder about it once and he sneered that "honor is only supposed to go to Jehovah". The idiot didn't know what to say when I asked "What about the 5th Commandment that says 'honor your father and your mother'?

I'm not 100% positive, but I'm sure it was probably Rutherfraud that got rid of Mothers Day, since he was so adament against anything that was fun.

If Jehovah is so jealous that he gets mad if you send your mother a card then I think he's an a**hole.

Is Mother's day considered a pagan holiday like Christmas and Easter?

I think it was invented by American Greetings to sell cards. So that would make it an economic holiday. The economy is part of the world.

There are two easy answers to this.

    1. Did Jesus ever send Mary a mothers day card?. Yes its dumb but when you are 8 you dont question dumb answers like that and they tend to stick.

    2. Mothers day gives glory to mothers every dub in the world knows that glory belongs to Jehovah only.

Money should not be spent on holidays or on loved ones. It should be put into the society's donation boxes.
