Apparently, Licensed Clinical Social Workers - (LCSW - what the woman speaking in the video claims to be) - were not - (and usually are not) - as well ecucated as other professionals dealing in these matters, but I bet physicians, particularly, pediatricians, as well as psychiatrists and other social scientists were well aware of the "body of information" on such child abuse at least 20 to 40 years ago; and you can bet many, if not most, feminist writers and scholars were too. Imagine the JWs listening to them ("bra-burners" or psychiatrists/MDs).
This tactic (of using pseudo-professionals) to make authoritative comments about social, religious and secular issues is very typical of the Watchtower Society. Just look at what they've done over the years with the blood and immunization issues:

Typical cult behaviour.
Oh! A church social worker! Maybe for a JW "church"?
I hope you don't mind my posting a transcript of this craptower society "defense," so that it can be picked apart by knowledgable researchers, point-by-point:

The Progressive Understanding of Child Abuse for Society in General
Dr. Bethea-Jackson:
I don't think, 18 or 20 years ago, we knew much of anything about pedophiles.
It wasn't really looked at as a criminal matter.
We didn't publicize it as being an act that needed some criminal intervention, so to speak.
We didn't look at it … or it wasn't … people didn't have the body of knowledge 18 or 20 years ago to say that this is something that will harm your child emotionally, if you don't address it.
Parents didn't know the seriousness, 18 or 20 years ago, and the long-term effects.
And as people document the work that they've done, some successes and their failures, that some of that early work did not get to the public.
I mean, it was in some New England journal somewhere.
But certainly it was in the process of being looked at and studied.
That information was not released.
We weren't taught that in school.
I went to one of the most prestigious social-work schools, at that time, in the country and in all of my studying,
we didn't have a course in child abuse.
I can't believe they are using the same quote as they did six years ago. Must be slim pickings out there to support their position of supposed ignorance.
I wonder too if it was taken out of context and if the lady knows for what purpose the Watchtower is using it.
I think everyone knows that sexually abusing a child is extremely harmful. You don't need to wait for an expert to tell you. I wonder if this lady was talking about the increase in pedophiles.
Definately damage control. I hope the snowball from these recent settlements keeps rolling until it is common knowledge how they have treated abused victims. Maybe now that money has exchanged hands, many more will be willing to sue for damages.
Okay, last point, first for me:
Why would anyone seeking to present a credible, knowledgeable response, post the opinion of a social worker who claims NEVER to have taken any coursework in CHILD ABUSE, which is what the topic is, to begin with:
I went to one of the most prestigious social-work schools, at that time, in the country and in all of my studying,
we didn't have a course in child abuse.
First of all, what are they trying to accomplish by this video of this woman? Are they trying to make everyone think that the WTS is not to blame because they were not told by professionals that child abuse is wrong? They were of the opinion that worldly psychiatrists and psychologists were wrong to listen to, anyway. Are they trying to say that this escaped their notice, or that no one in the WTS knew that there were any pedophiles in the organization? We know that is false.
What about spiritual enlightnment? Why use the words of a worldly woman? Where is the Bible?
Also, I noticed that, unlike other religious websites, there is no link to history of the WTS to look at. Wonder why.......
Damage control. And not too much of it........
Okay, so this is 2007 in case the craptower society/apologists didn't know. I just visited one site on history of laws and research on childhood sexual abuse:
http://www.prevent-abuse-now.com/biblio.htm
Its oldest (and still up-to-date) research on the long-term effects of sexual abuse in childhood dates back to 1978, 29 years ago. I believe the feminist outcry started before that and began helping to establish research and publicity for the issues as early as the 60's.
Unfortunately, people who chose to live in the darkness of watchtower "light" might not have known, unless they had been abuse victims themselves, like my mother, who is indeed crazy . . . and who still protects the "society," along with the rest who still live in denial.
From the transcript, this claim has to be absolutely a lie:
Dr. Gail Bethea-Jackson, LCSW-C, B.C.D., specializing in victimization, children and adolescent issues, and posttraumatic stress disorder . . .
because if the woman was "specializing in victimization" and in PTSD, and studied at one of the "most prestigious" schools of social work, how could she have not studied child abuse "in all of my studying."
This whole piece is either a blatant lie or total misrepresentation of the individual's credentials or of her statements or both.
I left a phone message for her in Maryland, asking if she was aware that her name was being used at a pedophile apologists' site.
Oh, yeah, there are a few interesting numbers and names attached to hers (or someone with the same name) that indicate she is in a supervisory role of some sort, and/or may be involved in elderly folks' social work and/or substance abuse counseling . . . I wonder how many LCSW with that exact same name there are:
Someone with that name is listed in the US Directory of Social Workers in MD, with a phone number and address:
http://www.healthcarehiring.com/social_workers_maryland.php
Also listed as some sort of supervisor (approved 2004 in Maryland) with her license # at:
