So I called Bethel a few days ago...

I pretended to be a student in a sociology of religion class at a university I made up... Middlebury Community College in Dallas Texas... :P

I said I was doing a report on how different denominations deal with the litigation, mitigation and media coverage of abuse allegations...

I said that I was wondering if the coverage I had seen ALL OVER THE INTERNET about the payout to the victims in California would be covered (and when) by the media page on the JW website.

They started asking tons of questions! My name, if I was a JW, where I lived, what school I went to, where it was located- jeez!!!

I asked why they needed all of this information to answer my question but they said that it would better help them direct my call... indeed.

So they put me on hold FOREVER. Then another person asked what I wanted and KEPT having to go answer other calls while I was talking. They said I'd have to write my question on an official letterhead (what?? I was only a student at a community college doing a paper fer chrissakes) and direct it to the legal dept.

I said- this is odd, you don't just have an official position on the abuse payout? I just want to know if it will be covered on your media page so I can take a quote.

I said that all the other churches that I talked to had been very open and forthcoming about their official position on this matter. I said that they all had someone to talk to me etc...

He said that all legal matters like this are always dealt with through an official question written on official letterhead to the legal department... LAAAAAAME.

I asked how long it would take to get a reply- he said it depends on the nature of the question... I just felt like I was getting flipped the finger by this guy over the phone line or something.

The guy said that all legal departments deal with questions this way. I said that it wasn't really a legal question- I just want to know if the media page will soon cover the info... I asked if he couldn't just tell me.

He said- "I can't comment on that."

Man, for a religion that is supposed to be all about the truth and as open as a book, they sure were closed-mouthed...

No surprise for me. If they don't answer the questions from sincere believers in the God they purport to worship, why should they answer anyone else's?

call back again but get some wt lawyers name first. off this site. you will do much better asking for a person than just asking to speak to some one. try asking for J.R. BROWN public relations dept, and remember to control the conversation. you made a great point telling them how un helpful they are conpared to other churches.

Kudra, this is a good point. I've often wondered how closely someone would have to monitor a site like this in order to catch posts on specific subjects... Good work by the way on calling them and do please keep us posted! But what is your opinion on if they would see this thread or not?
