Brinjen, if you don't want to broadcast where you live in the N.T., please PM me and let me know! I spend 2 1/2 years in Nhulunbuy (1970-73, a VERY long time ago) so I'd love to chat with someone else from up there.

As for careers, I started out by learning typing and shorthand at the Clarendon Business College in Strathfield, N.S.W. and working for my dad (who was in charge of the electronics and computers in that alumina plant in Nhulunbuy). When we came back to the U.S. in 1973, I dutifully pioneered and worked part-time, finally ending up as a legal secretary. Long story short (too late, I know), I am now the manager of a law firm with 6 offices in Texas and I really enjoy it. I don't have a college degree but I have many years working as a legal secretary and doing various administrative tasks.

I like being a manager, probably because I'm 51 now, with two children, so I'm used to ordering people around. If you like customer service, you can take that into marketing, selling, managing an office, travel agent, airline reservations or flight attendant -- the possibilities are endless!

Sit down and make a list of the things you LIKE to do and the jobs you've enjoyed the most, and then make a list of the things you hate to do and the worst jobs you've had. It will be very revealing and should help direct you to a career that you will find fulfilling.

    Best of luck!

    Nina

    HI Brinjen,

Ive just had 2 major career changes in the last 2 years.

The first was out of health reasons i just wasn't coping with what i was doing(more with post natal) and the hours and having a new baby and an older child just too much, the other was something my hubby and i wanted to do for a long time was to start our own business we have been lucky that i have the tertiary qualifications from my previos jobs that i have been able to meld them into our business.

This may not be for you and you have to bee 200% committed but it has been well worth it.

I have even considered going to uni to finish off a part diploma that i had done at TAFE and to get a bachelor of business.

So write down what your dream job may entail and look to see what you will have to do to get it or something close to it.

Its hard making that career change. But it can be well worth it in the end and if it doesnt work you will know that you had tried and wasn't for you.

    Regards

    Helen
