Common Refrigerator at work - keeping what's ours

Where my wife and I work, they have a refrigerator in the break room. It's used for temporary storage of employee food items - for lunch, and in some cases for butter or other perishable items.

It's easier to take a tub of butter and leave it at work for spreading on toast, than it is to take a tub of butter in to work, use it, then take it home in the evenings.

Well, we take a few things like the above mentioned tub of butter (not margarine), bottles of water, and sodas. We usually put our initials on the top of the bottles (which is a pain - but necessary), and place them in a certain location in the refrigerator.

The water and sodas, go inside the door at the bottom, all grouped together. (This fact will be important to remember in a minute)

Anyway... others use the refrigerator for storage of their items, too. There are also things that the boss buys - with company petty cash - for everyone to use. He sometimes gets cans of coca cola or other sodas, and puts them into the 'fridge.

(Note: Number of employees is about 12 to 20. Some are part-timers who come in in the evenings to work for about 3 or 4 hours.)

Okay. I think I've given enough details... now for what is happening.

My wife and I purchase things that WE want to eat and drink. We don't get inenpensive sodas... we get 'natural' sodas (if there IS such a thing) - you know those that use pure cane sugar, and no caffeine. They actually taste pretty good - although not like the 'high fructose corn syrup' flavored kinds that most folks drink (yall in Canada and Mexico - and parts of Europe don't have these... only us 'progressive' folks in the states sweeten our food with this.)

Anyway. What is happening is that someone... we are not sure who... is going in - after we leave for the day - and is drinking the sodas and using the 'peach' syrup (which was expensive).

The soda was actually opened, and a drink or two was taken out of it, and it was left on the counter to go flat - and be discovered by us in the morning (some people don't like 'natural' sodas). My wife was livid. (She also tends to go non-linear when something happens like this.)

This morning - someone used about 1/3 of the bottle of peach syrup last evening. Not sure what you'd use it on... there isn't anything that it could be poured on... my wife always brings in frozen waffles from home - so they weren't eaten by someone else... with syrup poured on 'em.

I'm just wondering who is rude enough to do something like this. Everyone here gets paid - so they could go out and buy their OWN stuff - as opposed to stealing it from someone else. (We both suspect one person - but I told the wife we need to be careful - it might be someone else.)

The other thing that I am beginning to mull over is... how to set a trap. I told the wife this morning... I'm thinking about putting something in the 'fridge... laced with ex-lax. Brownies, perhaps. Put our initials on the box - so that it is 'marked' as belonging to someone. Then sit back and watch who has to make frequent trips to the restroom during the day.

I also told her... the men's room is much further than the ladies - they're renovating the restrooms, and the guys have to go upstairs - which is a loooooong way to go when you really have to go.

    Ideas? Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Anyone?

    Regards,

That's why I stopped putting my stuff in the common fridge at work.

I take a smallish cooler bag to work with me and bring in only what I need for the day. It never goes near the common fridge or the break room unless I bring it there. Butter, peanut butter, salad dressing, yogurt, skim milk, teabags, sweetener packets, hot chocolate powder, etc. etc. gets transferred from larger containers in my fridge and pantry at home to just enough sized portions in Tupperware containers or ziploc bags that travel to and from work. I have a couple of small ice packs that go in the freezer when I come home and they're ready to go again when it's time to go to work. Washing the extra containers after every shift is a bit of a nuisance (in reality there are usually only one or two), but it's worth the effort considering that nobody can steal my stuff anymore.

Maybe a memo on the fridge to respect other people's stuff is in order - a simple reminder to be thoughtful and check to make sure things in the fridge don't belong to anyone else before using them.

Yes, but unfortunately, some people have the view that "why should I fork out my own money when there's plenty available for free? We had the exact same problem where I work. Some loser was going in after we'd all left for the day, taking fruit, frozen lunch entrees and my Almond Milk. I don't mean they were taking a drink-----they took the entire container. Naturally this didn't sit too well with me, so one day I added about a 1/8 of a cup of vinegar to the milk. I hope the idiot choked when they tried it.

You could definitely do that. I'd also see if there's any way you can hook up a camera temporarily to catch them.

they do this because these individuals are selfish thieves...although they probably dont view themselves this way.

Here's a thought.. you are a technical kind of guy....get a bottle of diet Coke.. clearly mark it as yours....open it...rig a single Menthos on the underside of the lid and close it... so that when it is opened again, the Menthos drops in...we all know what happens if you have seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByH_2Mizz_I

I used to be responsible for cleaning the refrigerator at one job (and we had 100 employees)... people would leave stuff in there forever...I posted a notice a week in advance that anything left by x date was tossed... I was nice enough to clean out the tupperware and leave it on top of the fridge instead of tossing it (goes against my avoid the landfill nature)...The next day, nice shiny clean fridge...that night, someone stole the inside top of the lid of my thermos...making my thermos useless...as retribution.

the point of the story...you mentioned leaving a tub of butter...12-20 employees, maybe you can do that....but if 12-20 employees leave something every day, pretty soon, no room for new lunches every day.... maybe you can do what Scully suggested

unless its a personal size fridge in an office, IMO, common fridges should only be for the sodas your boss buys for everyone and the for stuff brought in for that days lunch...and taken home each night....

I worked at one place that had 300+ employees and 2 commercial size fridges...every other week 1 was cleaned out... the howls of people who think they can use the work fridge to store stuff for weeks........when their stuff was gone....priceless...

Haha - we had same problem at work. It was mainlyu my water getting nicked. So I spread a nasty rumour about myself that I had cold sores. It soon stopped.

The same thing has happened in every place where I've worked. I sometimes wonder if these aren't the same people who used to steal other kids lunches in elementary school.

One person here sent an email to everyone here announcing the fact that someone ate her food that she had in the refrigerator, and she was quite scathing about it. I don't blame her a bit.

Another thing that happens here is some people forget their food and it spoils, and stinks up the whole fridge. One person has been assigned to throw out everything every Friday at 4 PM. If your food is still in there at that time, you're out of luck.

My own department has only 6 people in it, and we now have our own private refrigerator in my bosses office. No one else knows about it, and it works out well. We usually have a few beers in it too.

I would 'rig' a bottle with something like SnakesInTheTower suggested.

Where I used to work, we made a lovely chocolate cake - with chilli powder and lots of salt amongst other added ingredients. We left it in the fridge and sure enough it went...

... but nothing went missing again after that!!

Thanks for the suggestions (keep 'em coming) and input.

I remember at a previous place of employment... they had a 'fridge in the breakroom.

Yes, you have the bozos who leave their 'to go' container with the days' lunch leftovers in it for weeks... but you also had the poor employees that brought leftovers from the night before in a brown bag... or a sandwich... or whatever, and left it in the 'fridge for lunch.

They had a 'food thief' there, too. The lunch bags would disappear, or the sandwich would be nicked - or whatever. Folks started complaining - and management only started to 'listen' when something that THEY had put in there - disappeared (typical for this company).

Anyway - this was back when cameras were just starting to get smaller, or small enough - to be able to 'hide' it. The director of my section authorized one or two employees (or he did it himself) and had a camera placed inconspicuously above the ceiling tiles pointing at the refrigerator door.

Then they waited - and video-taped the comings and goings at the 'fridge.

Turns out it was a PHD weasel stealing the goods. I'm not sure if they ever told him that they knew it was him doing this. Perhaps they called him into the office and quietly talked to him. All I know is that one day, before he was talked to - I was in there with a buddy, and I casually commented "I'll be glad when they catch the food thief... he doesn't know that they've got a camera on the 'fridge." Well this thief was in there, and overheard my remarks. You should've seen him. He just about jumped out of his skin. Started looking around - all paranoid-like.

What really burned me up about this fella was that he made 3 or 4 times the income of those that he was stealing from. He could well afford to go and buy a meal at a restaurant, but he chose to steal someone elses' food. Jerk.

The folks that learned it was him - didn't think too highly of him after that.

Start telling people that you are ejoying the benefits of hindu health practices by mixing a bit of your own urine with the food you bring in to work.

Actually the only thing that is really going to do the trick is to place a wireless video camera in a position to monitor the room, and start 'er up when you leave for the evening. the nice thing about a wireless camera is that they won't know where the video stream is going. Even if they pick it up and destroy it, you'll see their face before the camera goes black.

This is the doing, not of someone who is hungry and seeking food, but someone who is hateful of the people who work there and cowardly to boot. Once they are "caught" everyone in the office should be informed of who they are, probably best done by emailing the incriminating video to everyone but the perp.

Nah, email the perp too and hopefully embarrass the shit out of him. Then he should be fired and escorted from the building. Last I heard, theft is just cause for termination.
