I like the JPS Tanakh (Jewish Publication Society Bible) rendering of the last verse in chapter 11 of Judges:
So it became a custom in Israel for the maidens of Israel to go every year, for four days in the year, and chant dirges for the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
According to the Wikipedia, a Dirge is "a somber song expressing mourning or grief, such as would be appropriate for performance at a funeral."
Seems self explanatory to me.
