What is the cost of the Canadian health care system, and what is it's impact on taxes?
Well, taxes are extremely complex. They are collected in many different manners, and rates are different for different people. So a comparison of tax rates wouldn't help much. Also, not all taxes are collected from people. There are resource royalties, business taxes, etc.
In my province, the health budget for 2007-8 is $3.446 Billion. In a population of 987,000, that represents a cost of $3,491 CAD for every resident.
Now, that doesn't cover every cost. Prescription drugs and optional procedures may cost extra (there are programs for seniors and low income people). As well, there are some additional costs for services like private hospital rooms, etc. But, overall, the basic coverage will take pretty good care of you.
