What's your opinion on genetic engineering?

    What do you think?

Are you opposed to it? If so why?

If not, what do you like most about it?

Where do you see it heading?

Would you allow your future child to be genetically altered if you knew it would drastically improve them? (Longer life span, stronger muscles, smarter brain, better imune system, extra limbs, super genitals, or something.)

I am for it, we need all the help we can get. Genetic engineering is helping to feed the 6B people on the planet.

I see as adding a whole new twist to survival of the fittest. For billion of years this has been the building blocks of Dna mutations, and survival of a species thru adaptation. What will breaking away from this cause in the yrs to come?

I'm not opposed to the concept itself, but the people who have the money to actually do it are not interested in benefiting anyone except themselves. Genetically engineered crops that are pest-resistant and grow more quickly in tougher ground? Sounds great. That could feed the whole world, right? But the sort of thing you end up with instead is corporations slapping a patent on it so they can not only monopolize that variety but SUE anyone else nearby whose crops have become cross-pollinated.

It's the most bizarre thing happening in patent law, that's for sure. The Jones pig farm, run by the same family for 5000 years, has bred their pigs to perfection. Monsanto comes in, isolates a couple of genes and puts them out of business.

Re child-to-order: yes it's possible that in a few hundred years it will be quite normal to be altering DNA so you get your perfect baby, but who cares, we'll be dead!

Maybe you should think about how the people with "Longer life span, stronger muscles, smarter brain, better imune system, extra limbs, super genitals, or something" would feel about you. What should they (the super race), do with people that have a shorter life span, weaker musles, not so smart brain, weaker imune system, fewer limbs, not so super genitals, ect.

I believe this is the next step in our evolution. We have progressed to the stage mentally where we can evolve quicker by bionic implants and genetics. Despite all our peripherals, it is our thoughts that make us who we are. It is possible that in the future man will entirely replace himself with bionic parts to sustain the brain, or use genetic engineering to increase our abilities. It is claimed that people alive today will still be alive in 2150. I can't wait to see the progress.

I agree, us normal people would probably be viewed as inferior. But that would only last for a generation or so untill our bloodline is gone, or the service becomes less expensive. We would be treated like disabled people. But personally I treat disabled people with respect, and so does everyone else I know, so I'm not worried. (Maybe I'd get my own parking space.)

It would be an uncomfortable situation for a while, but once that passed the human race would be SO much better off. And I wouldn't DREAM of stopping progress just to keep people from being superior.

I don't mind if people are better than me.

Great Technology. Promises to cure many things. Already in use anyway - all wheat production etc is genetically engineered
