I used to think it just evolved the way it has. But now I think it is deliberate.
Look at how Witnesses cannot decipher if someone is good or not unless they are seen at the meetings?
Every spare minute that someone may have the Society has something that you need to do in that spare minute. it's like they are up there watching......and say OK Ms Purps makes it to all the meetings now and studies and gets time in for service, but I notice she has an extra hour of free time.......How can we get it? Oh i know, make her feel like she is not giving enough, make her feel unsure if she will make it to paradise by not giving us that hour. Aha, it worked, we have that hour, now lets try for another one.
I have read about too many other mind control groups that do the same thing. They all do the same thing, and its deliberatly thought out.
They talk so much about balancing your life....the schedule they had for me was far from a balanced life.

The laws and rules, stories of the bible masterminded the mind control.
Very few people can break free from its grip.

Thank you all!
We seem to agree that it is a deliberate policy!
But this also reminds me of a family 'do' which we were invited to last year. Only husband self and kids are faded JWs. My cousins and relatives had gone on holiday together for three weeks. My mother said to them all, ' Did you all go to the meetings there? Did you enjoy it?'
There was total silence and immeadiate guilt ridden faces and confusion as the three elders all looked at eachother first and then one said quietly, 'Er, No. We didn't make it to the meetings.'
Silence again for a few moments ( as me and mine tried not to snigger at the obvious embarrassment and guilt of their having been caught out).
'Oh!' was all my mother said. They were ALL suitably chastised and guilt ridden!
Mind control and guilt feelings. Total domination of their time, feelings and emotions!
What a shame to see people crushed by such controlling tactics!
There wasn't even a glass of wine available for them to 'relieve the tension' of the occassion with!
How very sad and certainly a regular reminder to me and mine of the agonies we left behind.

On a related note, I recall a couple people here mentioning hypnotic practices of the JW meeting setup; it was said that having a speaker and a second person on opposite sides of the platform kept the eyes of people in the congregation moving constantly from left to right, and that this was a key element in inducing a semi-hypnotic state in people. I searched the web in an effort to validate or dispute this theory, but was unable to find much info, except that a woman named Francine Shapiro apparently came up with a possible method of therapy called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), to reduce negative emotions and stress associated with past memories or images. (As yet unproven, as near as I could find.)

1) Do you believe in this phenomonon, or is this an idea from the lunatic fringe?
2) Do you think the GB or others knew of it and utilized it purposely?
Note: I apologize if this diverges from the original intent of the thread too much, and will gladly edit it out and start it as a new topic if desired.

Hi AATW!
I know what you're talking about. I believe it is an Australian who noticed that the Watchtower Society use the same method as hypnotists in having a main speaker and another person with him and then someone walking up and down the aisle, as does the mike handlers nowadays.
But, I don't know if it is deliberate. IF you think of it, what is the POINT of having someone read out the paragraph, yet again, when the JWs have the information in front of them in the first place? So, why have the second person involved?
I may have saved this site somewhere and I'll have a look for it.

Thanks for taking an interest Gill, I was worried I might have gone too far off topic. Ah crap, just noticed I misspelled phenomenon, too. Oh well, to err is human.
