What's the main purpose to the out of town Assemblies?

    Gary:

While I never, never take issue with anything you say and see you as exceedlingly wise, I have never heard of "comp room resales." In the years I spent holed up in the Most Holy (aka, Adminstration) the comp'd rooms (that any convention would acquire for filling X seats in most hotels) were given to COs, DOs, visiting speakers from Bethel, and sometimes, if there were any left after taking care of the top brass, to those middle manager types who were running the food stands or other jobs where they had to be on site from early a.m. to well after everyone went home.

    Did I miss something?

The link is to a post by "maggie" who made 9 posts back in '03. She was given a comp'd room. She says someone suggested she make a donation to the society to show her gratitude. It wouldn't surprise me is some jerk suggested that, but I don't know if this amounts to the WTS selling "free" rooms. There are lots of things you can call these guys on, but I'm not sure this is one of them.

There's more. I can't find them right now.

didn't realize until I worked in Finance at the assemblies that a big reason they wanted all the JWs to use the hotels the org told them to is because they get a kickback in the form of free rooms. FDS Sends Convention Delegates Packin'
http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/72160/1.ashxNY, it goes to show it is not the individual member the WTS is concerned about saving money for but the kickbacks those in administration get from these hotels.

But of course. The WTS gets a kickback from every hotel THEY recommend. They want to know who the traitors are who deprived them of their kickback. They can punish the guys who don't check into Theocratically Approved(tm) hotels in a big-time way: they can take away your "privilege" of running around the Kingdumb Hall with a microphone and looking like the stooge and utter drone fool for them you really are.

http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/52323/1.ashxOne of the perks the WT receives from the hotels on the Recommended Lodging list is "comp" rooms. The hotel will provide rooms at no charge to the WT. These rooms go to convention department heads, usually the brothers over the Attendants, Cleaning, News, Rooming, Chairman, etc. The visiting Bethel speakers, any visiting Bethelites, and COs & DOs may also stay in these rooms. Since the rooms are "free" the WT recommends that the person staying in the room make a contribution (the money they would have spent on a lodging) to their coffers!

    $10,000 kickback?

I have talked to old timers: the DC would run over a week....days twelve hours long or so....no air conditioning....wretched living quarters....trips to the DC from the place they were staying miles and miles...

It was this horror storty and, guess what: They LOVED it.

Of course this was the group that survived the Great Depression and WW 11 and never left Dudsville, USA. A county fair was a heart stopper: think of what a DC was to them!!!!

What it is now, I don't know...or care.

The one thing I miss the LEAST is the misery of a DC or a CA. I can not tell you the intense, soul satisfying relief of knowing I will not be going to one of these mind-embalming, bathroom short, wish I had some money for decent food, propaganda, short term concentration camps.

    Sighing happily,

No one could say it better !

By the way what is with the bathroom shortages at DCs and CAs.

Remember reading of the famous ones at Cedar Point, or the massive one at Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds?

I was at the one in 1958 in Yankee Stadium, Polo Grounds and lots of overflow tents. A lot of colorful costumes people wore from different countries.

I was in New York in 1958 too. I was 13 and I remember it well. I was there all 8 days, all day every day. It sucked big time! It was an advertising gimmick, a fundraiser, and 8 days of advertising for a book printing company. I'd rather be dead than do that again.

This is the thread I was looking for. Google wouldn't find it for me but Alta Vista did.

http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/126208/1.ashxDec KM indicates extreme paranoia over booking hotels NOT on the list

The WBTS negotiates with hotels and get FREE ROOMS (KICKBACKS)

They cover it up and the R&F don't know anything about their scheme. I was aproached to book one of these free ROOMS however, I was told to make the payment directly to WATCHTOWER. I ask how did this work and was told because WTS books so many rooms they get a certain amount GRATIS. In any case I would be paying for the rooms so just think of this as a donation to the WBTS.I just could not believe the under hand scheme. Why not let the poor have the rooms

Gary: Thanks for posting the add'l info, I see your point.

I guess this is further evidence that every congo and every circuit and district has a slightly different set of operational "rules" depending on the personality of the leadership.
