Eye Spy Movie Trivia Question

Here is an obscure movie trivia question.

    The EYE SPY Movie

Does anyone remember a movie that starts by showing two men entering a highly secure document vault in order to request viewing a document. After being scanned by a x-ray device, they are let into the vault by the security men and are presented the document for which they came. One man very intently examines each page of the document, stroking his left temple as if in deep thought.

The next scene in the movie shows the same man in his bathroom where he removes his right eye! It turns out that the eye was false and actually contained a photographic camera that the he used to photographed the documents he examined while in the security vault!

The next several minutes are involved showing in detail the developing of the film, and the showing of some pages of the photographed "Top Secret" documents.

All this takes place in the move before the starting credits are shown.

Anyone know the title of this movie?

What is the name of the actor who played the Eye Cam spy role?

Interesting! I recall the 'preview of coming attractions' - it was about the same time as the 007 movies of the late 60's. I believe I had been to the theater to watch the movie 'The Ipcress File' when I saw the trailer for this flick. One scene in the trailer showed the guy in an elevator and the flash was malfunctioning on his eye camera, as I recall.

Can't recall the name of the picture.

    Hi AK-Jeff,

"One scene in the trailer showed the guy in an elevator and the flash was malfunctioning on his eye camera, as I recall."

That sounds like an interesting scene. "Excuse me sir, but your eye appears to be flashing!"

The late 1960's time frame is right, but I think the flashing eye scene is from another movie. I would like to see it though. Could it have been a comedy?

In the movie I am thinking of, the spy does not have a very large role. He is used mainly as a plot device to start the movie. The spy is eliminated not long into the film.

    Can I ask a question - request a clue?

Is the star of this movie a marquis name we would recognize yet?

Roy Thinnes was one of the main characters in the movie.

The bit part of the Spy with the Eye Cam was played by an actor probably more well know as Inspector Clouseau's boss whose eye started to twitch whenever he was around, or even heard the name of, Clouseau.

I remember seeing the movie in the old 20th Century Fox theater located in downtown San Diego probably around 1969. It was a nice theater of the style not made today.

That theater probably isn't there anymore...

If that's the right movie, then the actor's name is Herbert Lom.

Herbert Lom and Roy Thinnes were both in Doppelgänger in 1969. That movie was also known as Journey to the Far Side of the Sun. Great movie.

The discription of 'Journey to the Far side of the Sun' doesn't seem to fit the cloak and dagger spy movie genre.

    SO is this it?
