Justitia Themis had a topic 'Disgusting comment re: education from Tacoma 2007 District Convention' regarding a talk on education that those pursuing degrees would be D.E.A.D. Unfortunately that stupid comment was not made at the DC I attended, but I am providing the audio to let ones know how far the society is going in discouraging ones from pursuing college by using weak and tired arguments.

Thank you Fading Away! It is really useful to have an actual recording of the talk. I like to have the facts confirmed before confronting my opponents.

The world is a diffuicult place. The witnesses negative attitude about education just encourages people to slack off and go out in service on Saturdays and then to regret the bad decsions of their youth for the rest of their life.
If you get a college education it would be good to get it in a field where you could find work. Nursing, shool teaching. If you get a degree in studying the lint in your navel you might have a hard time finding work in your chosen field. But as I see it you will still make much more than the person who did not get a degree. Big companines, will hire people with degrees to manage those who do not have degrees. The people I know with degrees seem to make about twice as much per year as those with out degrees.
Even if you want to work in construction, they will promote people with degrees and education before they promote ditch diggers to office positions.
There are exceptions to every rule and the witnesses go about like the exception is the rule.
My daughter in law got a nursing degee R N and she makes 45$ an hour here in Florida.
7-11 pays 8.50. Mowing grass 6.oo%. Security gard 8.50$. Driving a truck 9.00$. Being an electrician start 7$ four years latter 13 $ an hour.
A house cost 200,000$ or more here in Florida.
Groceries for my wife and I cost a hundred dollars a week.
Electricity for ac etc here in florida at least 200$ a month.
Gas for your car to go nowhere but close to home 20$ a week.
Those people ought to be shot for preaching such inhumanity to their fellow man.
If you get a education to teach school here in Florida, I think they make $35,000 to start. 2 months off. No nights or weekends. Thats probably the easiest degree you can get and as I see it a very easy job.
I work in a juvenile detention center and when I hold over days I sit in the class with the teacher and students. I cant immagine an easier job than being a teacher. Plus they teach the same thing over and over. Its like an entertainer singing a song.
Everybody complains about their jobs, but I'm pretty sure you make more money and have more opportunities with an education.
The witnesses want the total dedication and attention of all their followers. When someone gets an education and learns how to read and critically understand a piece of writing they are not going to fall for the witnesses bullshxt.
The only thing the witnesses have to sell is fear, and education pours water on the fire of their fear.

OK, I'm gonna take a deep breathe now....................................whew! that feels better.
Where do I start with this lunacy?
To start, I'm so happy I got to sit and listen to 20+ minutes of this made up name Jehovah, and heard mention of Christ what?..2 times. What about being taught by Jesus?
And lets focus on the the 2 ladies:
Lady 1:
SHE made the bad choice on what she was going to college for, and couldn't get a job, YET, later on she says she worked in her field. Thousands of college students each year get through college and move on to jobs in their field of study. (Blame going to college for her bad choice, I love it)
Lady 2:
This is NO special thing she was experiencing that they were highlighting as "because of her being a JW, she is highly referred because of how she acts or teaches her own kids". Do you know how many thousands of daycare workers and home baby sitters get referrals and new kids on a monthly basis? Were THOSE referrals based on how they acted because of Jehovah?? Give me a break. Twisted thinking.
Conclusion...this talk, shows SPECIFICALLY that 1) you can go to college and still become a great faithful Jehovah's Witness, (they clearly proved this with the first girl did they not?)...Great teaching WTS, you just taught against what you're trying to teach)
and 2) this scare tactic clearly demonstrates that they really don't have great faith in "jehovah" and their kids, to think that they can't go to college and avoid all the negatives of college life. You make it what YOU make it. No one's forcing kids to go get drunk every weekend. A good student of this organization could easily avoid getting into trouble if they chose to, but the WTS knows better now, don't they???
Glad I could down load it...thanks for the link!

The "brother" who gave our talk said that 44% of college students binge drink. I did a fact check, and there are some variations between studies, but that number is about right. However, as I posted on a another thread, that still means that 56% of the students are NOT binge drinking. So, JW young people lack the ability to go WITH the crowd and not binge drink? Apparently, we do not think much of our children.

Mysterious
There were a lot of brains in university even first year that didn't drink, party or socialize. There were 2 guys on my floor I wasn't sure if anyone lived in those rooms. One day I saw a guy leaving the room and it was a big ah ha moment as I realized it was inhabited. Couldn't tell you his name not sure I saw him even at the required floor meetings or in the caf. He was on my wing as well and that was only about 20-25 people. If they are that worried there is always off campus housing. Save "party" neighborhoods that is often a very quite and secluded life, part of the reason why the recommend first years stay in dorms instead so they get more chance to socialize.

They aren't supposed to go to college because Jesus didn't? That was beyond ridiculous. What would Jesus need to go to college for? Did he have a family to support, a mortgage to pay, a car payment? If I could turn a rock into a loaf of bread,or turn a couple fishes into enough food to feed thousands, I wouldn't need a good job to support myself either. If people could resurrect the dead or heal the sick just by touching them, they wouldn't need to go to medical school. For god's sake!

Thank you!
I'm hoping to attend my local convention specifically to hear this talk in a few weeks. I plan on showing up just before it begins in my shorts. = ) If I can find my recorder there will be another version on the web. -

Fading Away,
I have transcribed almost the entire thing: Transcript from DC audio: "The Superiority of Being Taught By Jehovah"
I figure being able to cut and paste from the actual talk will help stir up some posts.
