I am trying to find an online C.L.E.P. test. Yesterday I found one on grammar. I took it, and of course failed it. Then I noticed something strange with four of the questions.

See if you can find the problems ? There is only one problem in each sentence.

1: Johnson (1) has (2) no equal as a salesman; his commissions are (3) larger than those made by almost any other (4) salesman.

2: (1) If people (2) had helped solved the energy crisis,(3) it might (4) of been a lesson to humanity.

3: The student (1) thought that (2) the lecturer had (3) referred (4) to The Communist Manifesto.

4: He (1) has always been negligent (2) about his health, and he (3) is feeling the (4) effects of his carelessness.

I have the answers, and I will post them after a while.

3: The student (1) had thought that (2) the lecturer had (3) referred (4) to The Communist Manifesto.

4: He (1) hashad always been negligent (2) about his health, and so he (3) is feeling the (4) effects of his carelessness now.

In my opinion, there is more than one error in both sentences 2 and 4. If I'm wrong I'd love to know why.

You are wrong and I don't know why I just have the answers. I made the same corrections in my head when I took the test.

Ok, I will play. But I would rather have a science question.

    1. (4) other

    2. (4) of + have

    3. (2) that

    4. (4) effects affects

You are wrong and I don't know why I just have the answers.

Then I am only wrong because you and the textbook (?) authors say so. No reason = no credibility

How can there not be two errors in this sentence? Are you saying one of these is correct?

4: He (1) has always been negligent (2) about his health, and he (3) is feeling the (4) effects effect of his carelessness.

Stylistically it would also be better to replace "and" with "so," to better causally link the present progressive state to the habitual of the first clause.

In sentence #3, "that" is superfluous to the sentence. Without the benefit of context, "had" seems superfluous, as well.

Other issues that are arguably incorrect (difficult to judge without the benefit of context) include:

    • the passive voice of "had helped"/"have been" in sentence # 2, could be rewritten in active voice.
    • the passive voice in sentence #3 "had referred to" could be easily rewritten in active voice as "referenced".
    • the passive voice in sentence #4 "has always been negligent" could be easily rewritten as "neglected".

I can't really argue whether your textbook is correct, since the author seems to have something specific in mind.

    My guesses:

1: Johnson (1) has (2) no equal as a salesman; his commissions are (3) larger than those made by almost any other (4) salesman.

2: (1) If people (2) had helped solved the energy crisis,(3) it might (4) ofhave been a lesson to humanity.

3: The student (1) thought that (2) the lecturer had (3) referred (4) to The Communist Manifesto.

4: He (1) has always been negligent (2) about his health,(comma shouldn't be here) and he (3) is feeling the (4) effects of his carelessness.
