I have a 22' sailboat in the marina. I took her out on Saturday and spent about 8 hours on Lake Superior. Saturday was an almost perfect day for sailing. Around 70 degrees with clear skies and a steady wind blowing. Lots of boats on the water. The summers here are pretty short and given that I have a few other summer interests, I put my boat up for sale last spring. Luckily, no one bought it. Technically my boat is still for sale if the buyer wants to pay the full asking price, but every time I take her out the asking price goes up. Anyway, here are a few photos from yesterday.
The marina where my slip is. Note picnic table at the right. I've killed several brain cells at that very table.
My boat. Its small but nimble and steady. The mainsail is uncovererd and the jib is rigged and ready to hoist. Outboard is down. Time to go!
Heading through the channel. Minnesota on the left, Wisconsin on the right, and Lake Superior dead ahead.
Another boat on Superior (aka the Sweetwater Sea) flying a spinaker.
1,000 foot iron ore boat inbound to Duluth to take on a load of taconite for the steel mills on the lower lakes.
My camera batteries died so I don't have any photos of the crew taking the traditional (my tradition anyway) safe return shot of scotch with dockside cocktails to follow. I did end up at that picnic table at the head of the dock later and joined some of the other skippers and guests. Someone brought out a bar-b-que, someone else set up a couple of blenders and was busy making strawberry daiquiris, and plenty of cold beer was on hand. I ended up spending the night on board.
