I feel so sorry for the wife and son of this man that lost his life trying to care for a woman being pistol whipped and purse stolen in WalMart parking lot

Jacksonville man is shot and killed outside a North Little Rock department store, the result of a purse snatching gone horribly wrong.

It happened outside the Wal Mart Supercenter on East McCain in North Little Rock Sunday afternoon. Witnesses say a man was attempting to steal a woman's purse when he shot 40-year-old Dean Worden of Jacksonville.

Worden was trying to intervene in the woman's beating and was shot twice. The man jumped in the passenger side of a Chrysler 300 and fled the scene.

North Little Rock police now say that gunman is Joshua Leallen Loften, 17. He was arrested early Monday morning and has been charged with capital murder as an adult in the case.

Bill Garner says the man pistol-whipped his wife, stole her purse and shot Worden before getting away.

“She said the man hit her four or five times with a pistol and got her purse,” he said. “The guy that got out of the car saw her getting pistol-whipped and hollered, ‘Hey,’ as if to interfere, and the guy turned around and shot him twice.”

If I were to intervene, I'd have brought my "little elvis" to the party (Glock .45) A shame that he had the right intentions but was unarmed. I feel deeply for his family.

Pretty scary. I have relatives in both NLR and Jacksonville and I think of them as small towns where that sort of thing doesn't happen - even though I know better.

When a person is involved with dispensing violence upon another, they are beyond the reach of mere words. A far better strategy is to be silent, approach from behind (or otherwise unseen), and incapacitate the offender by either killing him, shutting down his nervous system with a knockout or breaking his body so that he cannot continue the assault.

Shouting "Hey!" is completely inappropriate and ineffective. Verbal discourse will not win the day in situations such as this, as this poor man's experience demonstrates.

best is call the police first, even though your instinct is to rush to someone's defense. Wow, a 17-year-old murderer. That is chilling, isn't it? Years ago one of my employees was abducted by a couple of 16-year-old kids. They took her out in the country and emptied a gun into her. Luckily they were so stupid they missed all her vital organs and she lived. They were caught the next day with her car, her purse and the gun when the ran out of gas on the freeway! Horrifying.

I remember that one. One of the reasons I don't watch the news any more.

It's horrifying to think of a 17 year old doing something like this,
his life is over before it's even started, as I imagine he will get
a very long, and IMO well deserved jail sentence.
