A friend has sent me a mp3 recording of the lecture from the 2007 District Assembly entitled: "The Superiority of Being Taught By Jehovah" which discourages higher education. This one is from the Nottingham (U.K.) assembly this year. I thought it would be interesting to compare this with the mp3 of the same lecture from Georgia (USA) which was posted earlier here on JWD. It's pretty plain this is no quirk of some individual giving the lecture who got overzealous and said more than he should have. This shows the current Watchtower leadership is definitely anti-higher education.

The British version of this lecture discouraging higher education can be downloaded from this filesharing site. You will have to wait a few seconds for a countdown towards the bottom of the following link and then you will see a yellow "download" button to begin the download:

Thank you for the talk Cab. I have 2 versions not posted here yet from the USA. I'll get them up tomorrow.

This talk is similar to the USA talk. I was surprised to learn that a basic education ends at 16 years of age in Great Britain. Higher education is any college or university work after this!

I think the best way to get back at these a-holes is to go to college; the higher the degree, the better. I plan on getting a bachelor's. I figure that if the GB is ok with their slaves going to college to be lawyers and architects, etc., it's ok for me too. =b Up yours, GB (especially Splane).

    Mavie,

I'd be interested in hearing this lecture from the other two assemblies that you mention. Please post them for us! Thanks!

An additional thought, or rather question. Is rhethoric like this being reserved more for Assemblies so as not to put such "tough talk" into print?

I wonder what Mr Jaracz would do if everyone in the flock went for their Ph.D. and sent him the bills. And did zero hours of service and zero meeting attendance while in college. They would be expected to get a well-rounded education, and probably be primed for a better paying job. And leaving the Puketower Society when they get out of college. Hey, who knows! Maybe one of them will find the cure for aging and death and put it on the market, so anyone can live forever on a real paradise Earth without obeying ever-shifting rules.

Thank you for the talk from the U.K. and comparing it to the U.S.A. talk.

Another example that it is not from God because he values higher education and wants the best for his people!

thank you so much for posting this, my wife toned down their 'higher education' bullshit, but she hasn't been to friday's ass. yet.

first off, as an american, it's a lot easier to listen to a british speaker since the arrogant, passive-aggresive mock-humility tone of most talks i've ever heard is less discernable when the accent is different.

his first point was jesus didn't attend higher education, so we shouldn't attend higher education.

jesus also didn't drive a car, so we should drive cars, he didn't use computers, so we shouldn't use computers, and he had long hair and a beard, so grow it out brothers.

no, in the philosophy of jws, jesus not going to school and following his example is so absurd b/c when we get baptized, we don't get our eyes opened to our past in heaven with jehovah, and when we, you know, helped create the universe and the human race....i doubt 70 years of schooling wouldn't compare to what jesus got in the blink of an eye. i wish i could raise my hand and ask questions at assemblies.

wtf was his point about superstitions taught in schools?

here were his four reasons for not going to college:

    1. the expense of college (again, the bubble of the wtbts has no clue about scholarships, grants, awards, etc.)

    2. time involved and if you're craming for an exam it might make your spiritual activities suffer. (same lame crap....just like when we were taught not to engage in any extra circular activities in elementary/high school, so what did we do instead? watched tv or studied for meetings bored out of our minds and not developing necessary social skills...then masturbated whenever mom and dad weren't around.)

    3. exposure to corrupt influences, binge drinking, sex and courses on evolution. (name one jw who grew up a jw who hasn't had a night where they were puking their guts out from too much alcohol...no, name one jw who this only happened too once. and if you're craming for exams, how are ya going to find time to cram yours into hers? the society just hates people who are young and good looking, get them into bethel as soon as possible and have the boys shower together in the communal bathroom, see you after the meeting, anyone smell the pheromones in here? nope, don't bring up homosexuality in bethel...it's just on them thar damn college campuses)

    4. doesn't guarantee success, then he said people have been declined jobs b/c they were over-qualified, (but he's speaking of financial success and not success in life.)

wow, they are coming down harsh again like the 1980s/90s.

he only read three scripts, the jesus one, stretching it...apostle paul going off on his own education, what was up paul's butt, oh yeah, he was already educated, had a high position....who knows, he was still guilt tripping from when he was 'saul', kind of sounds like a david lynch film called 'lost highway'.

and the scripture from isaiah, what a joke, one verse, don't know the context, old testament anyway, barely applies?

the other thing about DCs is that every experience, every word is monitored and rehearsed over and over and then presented in front of the circuit and district overseers.....one ounce of deviation from the script/outline and they can't get their 5 minutes of fame in front of 10,000 people.

IF the wtbts IS the truth, then WHY would secular education threaten that?

i went inactive, went to college, was scared to death to have sex b/c i still thought armageddon was coming, but did make out with a lot of girls....didn't graduate b/c a "love" study came along and the elders continual chinese water torture sheparding calls about how horrible college was, i finally dropped out just to get them off my back....but even the portion of college that i attended continues to help me today with connections to the study and work i did in college and pretty much helped me get on track with my career and finding joy in doing what i love for a living.

    Thanks Cabasilas for posting this.

Is the motive for this talk simply :

    • No further education = more ministry time
    • No further education = less likely to become "worldly"
    • A way of still highlighting that further education isn't needed as the "end is near"

    ????????

    AlphaOmega,

I'd say the first two were explicitly stated in the lecture. The last one (nearness of Armageddon) would be implicitly in the minds of JW listeners but I'm not so sure I heard it so stated in the lecture.

I thought it interesting that the British lecture had the teacher put down what he'd learned in his university studies compared to what he'd learned in the Theocratic Ministry School. However, one cannot become a teacher without completing higher education. What's that tell the young JWs listening? "You can become expert speakers from the Theocratic Ministry School but don't think about becoming a school teacher!"

It is extremely sad that the WT is emphasizing all these negative stereotypes of higher education and interfering with the lives of so many of its young followers. By attacking all higher education the WT is setting the stage for losing those young adults who can't resist their desire to further their education and who later plan on seeking professional employment. Once they stray from the narrow JW path, they risk socially isolating themselves from others in the movement because of their choice to continue their education. Once isolated, any doubts they may have about the religion's teachings will then be magnified.

Many religious organizations set up college ministry for their youth to help their children transition through the college years. Look at all the effort the WT puts into Hospital Committees because of the blood issue. Imagine if the WT Society set up some sort of program to support youth while in college or university. It seems unimaginable that they could do it, but if they could the religion would end up being more successful in the long run.
