The Italian Mastiff. Also known as Sicilian Branchiero, Sicilianos Branchiero, Cane di Macellaio, Cane Corso Italiano, Italian Corso Dog.
I met a pair of them just last week and they were wonderfully behaved and anxious to be loved. Anyone own one?

my neighbor has one. this is the second one he's had since we've lived here. Evidently they don't have very long life spans compared to other dogs. He said they only live 8-10 years.

To me this dog breed looks aggressive but they may well not be such, if they are I wouldn't own one I prefer small dogs with weak jaws that can't harm anyone or any other dogs and get me in trouble so that I can also let them roam around on their own when I can't take them out for a walk.
Greendawn - they do look aggressive. I pointed that out to the owner of the two I saw. He said they are gentle dogs, though protective by nature. He invited me to pet them - and they tried to lick me to death. Like all dogs, proper training is the key I suppose.
I commented that my neighbor has Mastiffs and they are aggressive. He said this breed is not like the English Mastiff in that regard.

A friend has a mastiff mixed with I think it's a Dane..Anyhow, awesome beautiful dog.
Mastiffs are beautiful, but kind of scary just by their size. All the ones I have ever encountered were teddy bears. Reminding me, I would actually return to peoples houses that didn't take any literature but were nice if they had a cool dog I could see again. I wasn't a very good witness in retrospect.
I perhaps shouldn't say this. Don't want to offend anyone, but as soon as I saw it, I thought, "YUK". It looks like it's going to drool and slobber an awful lot to me and I bet it's got terrible dog-breath! As you might have guessed, I'm not a dog lover myself but each to their own eh?

I have never met a Mastiff that I didn't like. Drawbacks are size (and size of droppings!) and they are slobberboxes. JK

Just didn't know where to put it. Didn't seem to fit in any category - but most people that love dogs would have to admit that it is a relationship more than a owner/owned situation.
