Barbara Anderson has quite a lot of info on the Russell family. Direct a PM to AndersonsInfo on JWD and see what she has to share.

From Pittsburgh born there in 1852. Some researchers claim that his family is of Jewish descend and originally from Germany where it was known as Roessell, later on moving to Scotland it was anglicised to Russell.

At some stage the family embraced Christianity but as is often the case with such conversions kept some of its Jewish heritage and spirit generation after generation. This may explain why Russell was so intimate with the Jews and championed their cause as if he was one of them. He worked mightily for the restoration of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Though appearing as a Christian he was at heart a judeo mason openly as well as secretly working to promote their interests.
