and 1986 was the UN's International Year of Peace.

LOL ya what a joke 21 years ago.

Now on the un and religion. Could it happen? I dont see why it will. Religion is the opium that keeps the masses in line. On the other hand it is not impossible. After all several huge countries went from very religious, to in a sense outlawing religion.

There was a time when it could not have happened in the USA. Now most people are scared sheep. Fewer and fewer people bear arms (compared to yesteryear) and the mil could be used to put down any rebellion by an already sheepish populous.

Not saying it will, just that, yes it can.

This is one of the most ludicrous WT teachings, and that's saying a lot. This particular interpretation of prophecy assumes that the UN actually has authority to do such a thing. THEY DON'T! The UN cannot enforce its own decrees. They have no military. To worst they can do is sanction a country that violates its orders. Can anyone imagine the UN issuing a decree banning religion and people waking up in Saudi Arabia the next day tearing down their mosques in response? Of course not.

I really struggled with this one when I was an active Witness. I had to go through some arduous mental gymnastics to make it work in my mind. I would tell myself that, even though it doesn't make sense, Jehovah says that he will put this thought into the minds of the world leaders, and Jehovah can make anything possible. Why, people scoffed at Noah when he told them God would bring a deluge and their laughter didn't stop until the doors of the ark were closed...

Deep down inside, I was just waiting for 'new light" to clean that mess up. The possibility of a world body issuing a decree banning religion is less of a possibility now than it was at any point in the last century. Back when the Soviet Union was the great enemy of the U.S., you could potentially envision a scenario where the Soviet Union would win the Cold War and promulgate atheism in order to further their cause, but they've long disappeared from the planet. Many experts believe that the world is in the middle of another Great Awakening. Religion and religious fanaticism in particular, is growing throughout the world, not just in the Middle East, but in Latin America and the United States as well. Religion isn't going anywhere, folks, no matter what the U.N. has to say about it.

As I recall it went the UN would turn against "false" religion, and that would begin the great tribulation, then when they would turn against the witnesses that would start armageddon. I remember explaining this at school at least once, they must've thought I was some kinda loon or something. :p

That's correct. And so the WTS had to figure an explanation to get out of this box. And they came up with: "Well, actually the MEMBER NATIONS of the U.N. will turn on religion."

Can you imagine the member nations agreeing on any such thing? The U.N.has radical members arguing at each other all the time. I guess the WTS is trying to say some sort of miracle will happen, that Jehovah will plant his idea in the minds of the members.

Then after this idea is carried out, only Watchtower-lovers will be religious - everyone else will have turned atheistic or non-religious.

This all begs the question, if Jehovah is so powerful why does he need to use a human organization (or collection of such) to carry out his divine will? He's supposed to be all-powerful, why doesn't he just do it himself or send a few of his hundred million angels to do his will?

Aren't all those Islamic fascist states 'member nations'?

Those wacky madcap Muslims, burning cities over cartoons of their prophet and flying planes into buildings when they were planning on going SECULAR all along!

What will they think of next?

    Yeah, THAT'S gonna happen!

    NOT!

One of the outlines for a public talk I used to give was based on this idea. I think it was entitled, "What will the future bring?" I actually enjoyed giving this talk, as the brothers would always talk about this for days after the discourse. However, if memory serves me right the outline did not mention anything about the UN destroying the world’s religions. I never mentioned anything about the UN destroying the world’s religions. I remember clearly stating that government would put an end to religion, but as to what government or governments we did not know. We just had to keep vigilant because once it happened, it would signal the beginning of the end and the government(s) would be coming after us; Jehovah’s Witnesses!

It was actually quite exciting. Usually a murmur would go through the crowd at this point. I always took it to be that the military would follow their own government’s decree, but that all the nations would be in agreement to sink “Babylon the Great”. Never once did I mention anything about the UN, but then again, I never really stuck to the script, it used to drive the elders crazy!

I remember a misinformation post and website that claimed the UN would ban religion. Wouldn't happen. Indeed, the UN has been a fierce defender of minority beliefs and religions. Here's some interesting sites:

How is the UN going to ban religion? I think it would make much more sense for them to ban cults like the Puketower Society that misrepresent the Bible. And the people should educate themselves, so they will not believe in the fairy tales that are in the Bible (I always had a hard time believing the mysticism about the Flood, the Tower of Babel, original sin, the exodus out of Egypt, and any of the miracles in the Bible as actual events.)

Religion is a matter of thought, not action, therefor it is impossible to cause a person to give a religion by law or by force.

A person must choose to give up religion of their own free will.

Saddam Hussein ignored 13 UN resolutions- and the US/GB (Anglo-American World Power) went to war over it. And we all know how anti-war people are becoming. All the UN can do is pass resolutions - it is totally tooothless - Saddam ignored 13 - how many do you think the rest of the world will ignore
