The sherriff said that there was "minimal" gang activity in his county (elected official).

Yeah, sure. A police officer told me the same thing in this city when my son was a teen. Now ten years later they have a specialist "anti-gang" unit. If they had listened to the parents when the kids were forming up....

I told them that the grandaughter was, at least, affiliated with a gang. The grandparents and mother are in shock. Mother jumps the gun and calls a parent of one of these gang buddies. Now, it's known that grandaughter told on the gang. School starts in a few weeks, and it's likely too unsafe to send her. They will beat her up/kill her since they know she squeeled...

    So, anyone homeschool?

what has happened since you last posted? It's so serious, I think the advice to move might be the best advice.

    Uh oh.

Now it's time to move. Don't underestimate these gangs, they do KILL. I lost a lot of classmates when I was in high school, and no I didn't go to a "bad" school.

If I had seen this post earlier, I would have told you not to tell the parents/grandparents about this for that very reason.

When I was in school, there was a local Police Department program called "Scared Straight." Kids who were at risk for criminal activity or gang involvement were sent to prison for a couple of nights, and I do mean locked down with inmates for several nights. That worked for a lot of the kids, provided they weren't already "hardened."

    Good luck.

I can't, and won't suggest what you should do. That is up to you. However, last year my 17 year old son was beat into a coma by 6 members of the local Bloods chapter. My son, a poser with the local Crips, had the shit scared out of him, not to mention us. Gangs are a serious problem in our society. I suggest you do some research on the gang situation in your area, and share it with her.

The one that got through to my son, was the practice of "beat in (blood in) beat out (blood out)."

If I can be of any help, (I was a gang officer for 20 years) pm me.

Terribly sorry to hear you're going through this. Is it possible to get a mentor for the teen?

One piece of very good research news I heard recently regarding teens and gangs: many, many teens do outgrow it. Very heartening to hear that.
