I've noticed on here lately a trend towards looking at the "sunny side" of otherwise unsavory historical figures. I thought I'd climb on that band wagon.
I love Hannibal Lecter. Yes, I know he's a fictional character. Yes, I am aware that he's a mass murderer. Yes, I realize he's a cannibal.
Howerver, are you aware that he only ate rude people? While he murdered a number of other people by other wickedly creative means (ex. Signiore Pozzi, whom he hung from a balcony and disembowled), those he feasted on were the rude. Among these were Ray Liotta's crass and misogynistic character and the prison inmate who flung you know what at Clarise. And while he did not eat the obnoxious, bullying weirdo in the wheelchair to death (he let the wild pigs have that tasty treat), he did rearrange his face.
Hannibal Lecter was also the consumate gentelman. He was refined and well read. He treated Clarise like a princess. Why, he even chopped off his own hand to spare her! What more could a lady ask for?
So tonight, when I sit down to dinner, I think I'll pour myself a nice glass of wine and toast my favorite story-book hero: Hannibal Lecter.
