I went to a seminar today, they were offering an opportunity to sell your store items online through their front. It is spendy to start but it sounded good. Are you working online ? And if you are, How successful is it ? What should I know in order to make it succeed ?

I sell online but it's local, unless I ebay.

Make sure you research the biz that put on the seminar, just to make sure it's not some sort of scam.

I don't want to dissuade you. Obviously online stores can work or else there wouldn't be any....however, about a year ago I personally tried to help one of my brothers with his online business. He had NO idea what he was getting into. The company promised him the moon: easy setup, we'll find items from distributers for you to sell, it'll be a snap, etc. He paid...get this...I kid you not...$7000 for their startup materials....in return he basically got...well...nothing but the shell of an e-store and he had to do ALL the work. It wasn't even a good shell...ugh. I quite literally could have put hundreds of hours into just setting the damn thing up for him, nevermind actually running the business.

Anyway, I later saw an advertisement on TV that provided the exact same kind of service...for about $260. He is sooo computer illiterate that there was no way it was going to work. I made a valiant effort to save him from his bad choice (he didn't talk to me before he plunked down the money), but in the end, there was no way to do it. He finally bitched enough that he got most of his money back, but it was a huge mess.

I wasn't at your seminar, but I have been to several sales pitch seminars over the years for various things, and there is one thing I have learned from it all: when they tell you how easy it is, how much miney you'll make, etc., ask youself..."Well, if that's true, why aren't they just doing more of that (whatever that is, ie. what they are selling). Why are they putting on a seminar telling you how to do it if it is so great? Shouldn't they just be doing it themselves?"

Not saying this seminar was like that, but...ya know...

I built electronic componets and sold them from my website for nine years. The level of business got to the point that I could no longer keep up with the orders so i sold it. On top of the sale I also invested 1/2 of the profits into a small local oil company. The interest income started to exceed the monthly sales income so that is when I decided to reclaim my life back and stop working 12-14 hrs a day.

Working out of your home has it's advantages and disadvantages. If you can not manage your own website then you have to find someone else that is very good at it. I was fortunate enough to have a couple friends that did not charge alot to maintain the site.

Oldflame which is that company and what is their website? It sounds good as if they will send you plenty of customers but there are a lot of scums going on in cyber space. Someone starting a business will have to advertise and that costs money, so does this company promise to help bypass that stage?

You really don't have to spend a lot to sell online. The only time it should cost is if you want something totally customised / integrated with your site and zero branding from someone else.

If this isn't important then I'd dip my toe into the things provided by Google etc. first to see how things go.

I have set up a small web site that I use to sell the software that I write for CAD.

It does (or did) pretty well the last 9 years. The CAD company got bought out, and so now the CAD software I wrote the programs for is being discontinued, so I won't make much more income from that venture.

It taught me a lot though. Well worth the experience.

I'm now moving on to another product that I am hoping to market via the internet - more hardware based. Solar panels, batteries and LED lighting.

    Regards,

    Jim TX

it doesn't cost a lot to start selling on line. What it takes is time and attention - you have to create/produce/find a product and market it. I sell on ebay and amazon.com - there are other sites as well. I don't do it for a living, but make $100 or $200 a week at it - when I keep at it steadily. I wrote and self-published a book and sold it online, did pretty well out of that until I sold the book to a publisher. I would say don't buy into the sales pitch at the seminar you took. Do more research and spend less money. You can even do as I did and take an online community college course in html so you can maintain your own websites.

The seminar was with stores online. They set you up with a store front and all the tools you will need to keep the business going. There is a start up fee of $2700.00, this also includes some marketing courses so you can keep your store running. I am not computer stupid but I am not the almighty computer whiz either. I am so desperate to find work that does not do more damage to my back that I already deal with. So I thought gee millions are out there doing this why can't I ?

Lots of good information from you all and I thank you for that. How would a guy go about investigating this company ?
