I find it amusing that getting a tattoo is wrapped up with going overboard with drugs and other wild activity given their growing popularity. It seems a pretty tame way to "go wild."

Emerging from their often unsavoury reputation of the recent past, tattoos have gained increasing prominence in the past decade. Life magazine estimated in 1936 that 10 million Americans, or approximately 6% of the population had at least one tattoo. A Harris Poll, done in 2003, nearly triples those numbers and estimates that 16% of Americans now have one or more tattoos. For a complete breakdown of the Harris Poll numbers, see below.

Thirty-six percent of those ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of those ages 26 to 40, have at least one tattoo, according to a fall 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center.

The National Geographic News stated in April 2000 that 15% of Americans were tattooed (or approximately 40 million people!)

Esquire Magazine estimated in March 2002 that 1 in 8 Americans was tattooed.

According to the American Society of Dermatological Surgery, they stated in 2005, that of all the people they treat with laser and light therapy, only only 6% are getting a tattoo removed.

Harris Poll, 2003, estimates that fully 36% of those aged 25-29 have one or more tattoos.

A 2006 a study done by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 24% of Americans between 18 and 50 are tattooed; that's almost one in four. And the survey showed that about 36% of Americans age 18 to 29 have at least one tattoo!

You know what I did once I was out? I realized that I had the freedom to see if certain things really were bad for me, so I fornicated three times with one person to see if I would regret it or not. Know what? I didn't and still don't. What I learned was that kind of behavior with a person I didn't even know or like is not for me. It made me really think about what is best for me ON MY TERMS. I decided that to continue such a practice would eventually make me feel cheap. Being slutty is not for me. I learned that. Best do it with someone I know and really care about. I also wanted to know what cigarettes tasted like, so I tried that. I didn't feel the nicotene or even like the taste enough to build up an addiction, so I decided that smoking more than maybe one cigarette every two months wasn't really up my ally. I do like the taste of menthol, though. The pack is gathering dust in my dresser drawer. Tried pot for a few months. Just had to know what it was like. REALLY loved the flavor of pot! Decided it was not worth getting arrested for or any of the other rediculous sanctions the law mets out for pot. Never busted. Haven't touched it for years. Alcohol is stronger and legal. Still, the bottles in the cupboard are dusty. I forget they are there. Got a nose ring and tongue ring, which I love! Kept those. Took out the belly button one because it wouldn't heal right. I guess I did go crazy for a time with all of that, but I learned about myself and what I really wanted and needed ON MY OWN TERMS. How many JW's just don't know themselves? It's sad. I am so happy now that I am free to get to know me. The journey is long and fun!

Since exiting the Borg mentally I still have some of the same views that I was had while still in. I haven't gotten any tattoos and piercings(not saying that they are necessarily bad), haven't smoked, haven't done drugs, and haven't fornicated even though sex has been offered. It can be very easy to get wrapped in those things once leaving the Borg, but I don't want to deal with alot of the bad consequences that come with them.

Yes this has been acknowledged and seen with people, particularly with the young, they tend to let their personal guard down and let everything in that was previously put on restraint.

This unfortunately can cause allot of personal damage to the individual on social and moral grounds and at times may cause long term damage if the personal character is not corrected.

There are in fact good personal guidelines of social behavior within the JWS that are of course obvious, such as smoking, abuse of alcohol and drugs, promiscuous sex to name a few

but there is also a proportionate amount of social behavior that is put on restraint that is not beneficial to the individual in a developmental way. Unfortunately many young people that leave,

fall down badly due to not yet establishing their own identity, the one that the jws laid down was deemed too restrictive and over bearing and made them feel not true to their character,

so they leave that and start to play the role of a wordily profile that they were taught so much about. Personally I think it leaves them in a blank space where the individual doesn't know how

to live a clean and wholesome life style to their own betterment and possibly creates a weak and vulnerable character.....................................my 2 cents and observations

White Dove, I loved your account. I haven't been nearly as brave as you. I suspect I have an addict gene, and I just don't want to set it off. JWD is addiction enough.

Not a JW here, but I had a crazy mamma. She told me if I rolled my eyes too far back they would get stuck there. I privately tried it out, and they didn't. That led to some more experimentation, just to be sure. And yes, it is important to wear fresh underwear. I was eight years old.

When I finally leave, I am going to Vegas baby! I am going to a casino to lose almost all of my money playing poker. I am going to spend what I didn't lose at the tables on ale and whores.

That's the extent of my lack of restraint.

I did something really crazy after I left. Independent Bible Research. That's right! I did extra bible study and research without using the Society's publications!

    I am one bad, muthaf*#$@%!

I was raised in "the truth"TM. When we were young we were not even aloud to play with water guns. We were restricted from watching any thing with guns on TV. Now I own legally many rifles and hand guns. I have a concealed carry permit and have a member ship at the local gun range. A total 180 in life style. I don't smoke gamble or tattoo's .
