Just watched Anderson Cooper's report on 60 Minutes...

  on the topic of "snitching". I was very troubled to hear that the "no snitching" policy is so pervasive in the African American community. If this report is accurate, this policy is a rule that is followed fervently. It's a status symbol of sorts and provides "street cred".

  One rapper (I don't recall name) was asked if he would notify the police if a serial killer lived next door. He said: "I might move, but I would not call the police". Unbelievable!!!!!

  I realise police brutality and racism have fostered mistrust, but this is riduculous!!!!!!

  Any thoughts? Any suggestions as to how to help people overcome this mindset?

  Just cut down on the number of serial killers, it will be all right. Blacks are predominately democratic, they dont subscribe to republican values or lack of them.

  I don't think this is a democrat/republican issue (I lean liberal myself). I think it goes much deeper.

  Last week, statistics were released noting that blacks were most likely to be the victims of crime by fellow blacks. This is the culture that Cooper was talking about - inner city blacks are most likely to be the target of crime by fellow inner city blacks, and the least likely to tell the police about it, according to his report.

  Is that the result of not reporting crimes, or the cause of not reporting crimes?

  I'm reminded of how the Bush administration had the strongest support for a long time from the country's poor, at the same time that it was the poorest people in America that were the hardest hit by Bush's tax and other policies, and they are the ones providing the majority of soldiers fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  At some point, someone stands up and says, I've had enough of this shit!

  When I was younger, before my brother considered joining the religion that dominated my life, he ran with a pretty low crowd of whites. No blacks were in his inner circle. The creed was basically the same ' we don't snitch on anyone'. A snitch was considered lower than low.

  I think some of that crowd knew of things that would have curdled my Jw blood - they have never spoken of them as far as I know. My brother, though later turned Jw, might have taken some of the things he knew to his grave.

  My point? It isn't just the inner city blacks. That attitude pervades a lot of lower income groups IMO.

  I realize that AK J. I was just commenting on the report I saw. It seemed to indicate a new growing trend of this mentality reaching new heights among African Americans because of Hip Hop lyrics that encourage it.

  For a time I had an African-American roommate from Detroit. She didn't mention the "no snitch" rule in a general way. She had been a volunteer in a domestic abuse shelter and was concerned about black women in particular because, apparently, it is an unwritten rule that one does not turn a black man over to the authorities. So black women and children have little recourse to help.

  most times; that's true... I don't think this is so much a 'race' thing though, as it is a "criminal mind" vs. "us" thing. unfortunately there are more criminals per capita in the black race, than there are in most others... THAT is most likely caused by poverty/environment issues...

  The poor were just the ones to get the least amount in his refund policies.

  BUT, the poor are the ones that get back more in refunds than they made all year (due to the - oh crap; I can't remember what it's called....)
