Thanks for the warning the problem is that they are sent through known friends and one may not suspect something is wrong as would be the case if something arrives from a total stranger.
Losing a HDD could mean a lot of heart ache for many who have a lot of non backed up info stored on it.

My pleasure to help.
2 more points:
1) Big name antivirus programs that you pay a subscription for are not always better than the free home versions from other software companies. The big name subscription programs are Norton and Mcafee, neither of which I would touch with a ten foot pole. Free AVG and Avast! are both superior products in my experience. I personally run AVG on all of our home PCs and I feel very protected. I have had to install AVG (the free version) on other people's systems that had fully paid for and updated Norton just to get rid of viruses Norton missed and/or could remove.
2) As far as backups, Windows XP comes with a very easy to use backup program.
Start ->All Progams->Accessories->System Tools->Backup
If it isn't there for some reson, you can start it by
Start->Run-> type ntbackup into the text box
Either way, it will walk you through what you need to do. (You can also use the advanced option instead of the Wizard, but either way, it will get the job done)
For home users, just backup data (your documents, pictures, etc.) Don't worry about backing up programs since you can aways just reinstall them from the CDs.
By just backing up data, you can do so in much less space than you might think.
Depending on what hardware you have available to you, you can set the backup to save to an external device, or even save it to the hard drive and then later burn the backup file to a CD or DVD (depending in the size).
Laters!
