Yes, it all seems so antiquated as we look. To be fair, the blame-the-victim mentality was pretty widespread in the 60s and 70s, and Watchtower publications were just one of several sources that reflected this simplistic, patriarchal mentality.

I think if you look deeply enough, you'll find that this mentality also prevailed in lots of Christian groups, and was not unique to the JWs - which is not to excuse the nonsense they wrote about rape - but just to place it in the context of societal norms at that time.

As much as the witnesses like to believe that the Watchtower is above worldy trends, it is in many ways a product of its time: As bound to societal myths and prejudices as any other organization. l

While that may be true, i doubt that the whole of Society twisted it to apply to a that scripture where you are 'obligated' to cry out to Jehoober. That is one of the worst parts.

I remember this talk when I was a kid, I was around 11 or 12 years old and kepting shaking my head during the talk, and whispering to my mom that not every woman can scream during the attack, wether it be because the rapist has threatend her life if she does or because she was to scared at the time, my mom just was shushed me. I was mad and thought how unfair this expecation was and absurd the brother was to even have the nerve to get up on stage and give this talk, as a woman I was offended and felt bad for rape victims. This talk was what first set in motion my desire to get away from jw's and rebel.

    Rape is violence.

When someone is raped, she (or even he -- there are also male victims) is in an extreme situation. It is not always easy to think (or act) rationally in extreme situations. There are those who are paralysed by the situation. There are those who even try to console the rapist by reflex. We all have an "autopilot" that can be activated in extreme situations. Also during a rape, the "autopilot" can be activated, and the victim survives, only to be told afterwards that she (he) "should have done this or that accordig to scripture such and such".

The statistics show that most rapes are performed by friends/husbands/boyfriends, i.e. people you trust. That makes the situation even more extreme, as a cruel violation of intimate trust.

Compare it with being suddenly knocked out on the pavement. We would never demand that "well, you shouldn't have fainted, and even if you fainted, you should have fought back". But people do actually demand this from rape victims. It makes me sick.

Sorry, I just had to write it down.

    That is horrible! Infuriating!

I recall reading an awake or watchtower(can't remember) that told the story about a woman that was attacked and screamed "jehovah!" over and over. The guy took off. As if the name jehovah is a magical charm that will protect you from harm...it couldn't be the fact that she was screaming huh?

I hate the blame the victim tone of this article. If a woman acts like shes had sex, that makes her a target for rape? What!? They include displays of affection in this. What displays? Holding hands?

I don't find fault with telling a women to scream or fight back (because it can protect you) but with the attitude of if she doesn't scream, then she consented. That is bullsh!t. She might have been frozen in terror. I can't imagine having to go through that accusation after being raped.

The biggest problem is that Jehovah's Witnesses still adhere to the Mosaic Law. They are not a Christian religion. They are a Jewish hybrid.

Rape is an act of violence. One who is raped has had a crime perpetrated on her/him. Nothing else should matter.

"The GB has such a f*cked up idea of what rape is." - aSphereIsNotAcircle

That's because the GB commits rape every day - raping the minds of its members, especially children - most of whom also do not scream and yell about that, but when they do, they are further victimized.

It is just like a rapist organization to promote 'blame the victim' policies - in every situation - from rape to mental illness to all other suffering. The GB is a collective, rapist bully.
