I heard statements like the one you mentioned where people said they would stay because it is a moral way to live, etc. and how it was for their best interest to stay there.
I always wondered if the people who said these things had doubts deep down inside and were trying to rationalize their 'faith' or trying to silence the voice in their head that keeps telling them they have wasted too much time. You can only suppress doubt so much.
