My husband the MS was always helping the congregation elders financially and always overcompensating in the contribution box to help with congregation expenses.
My dad always gave something (I never knew the amount). Even when it was a lean month. My mother was (and probably still is) resentful of that. He would also help any "brothers" in need and on more than one occassion got burned.

never seen or heard of this happening. It would never occur to me or my fellow elders to do such a thing.
Although not widespread or a "rule", it did happen in some congregations. Both my father and father-in-law dipped in their own pockets when the congregation came up short.
