Rumsfeld and Bush charged with War Crimes:
What are we becoming?
Thanks I was having probs with my posting.
This video was from the fall of 2006, almost 1 year ago. Did this bill ever become law?
Bush was seeking immunity from the War Crimes Act of 1996, which makes it a crime (in some cases punishable by death) to mistreat detainees in violation of the Geneva Conventions. The 2006 legislation sought by Bush would water down the punishment of the war crimes act retroactive to 9/11/2001.
When the president takes the oath of office before a new term, he (or she) swears to uphold the laws and constitution of the USA.
Bush and his administration have clearly sought to be above the law. This is arrogance. We elect a president, not a king. The president should be kept in check by the judicial and legislative branches of federal government. To have it otherwise threatens the very fabric of our constitution and our country.
I don't know if Bush and Rumsfeld should go on trial. But the Geneva convention does apply to them, as confirmed by the Supreme Court. When that ruling came down, Bush and cronies sensed they were in deep doo-doo. How is torturing prisoners in the 'best interest of America' anyway? Such tactics don't consistently produce reliable information anyhow. Not that Bush is a great student of history.
I think it would send a positive message to the world if they were put on public trial.
Agreed, brother.
Although I'm not sure the whole of society has evolved to that point.
Yes.
I think it would do help develop a positive view of America and Americans around the world than all the invasions and bomb-dropping they can achieve.
And yet, none of the 7 previous posts ever discussed anything about charging the true war criminals with war crimes. That goes to show you, the left doesn't give a flying (edited) about human rights, all they're concerned about is sticking it to the white Christian establishment.
"Should Bush and Rumsfeld be put on trial for war crimes?"
Why not?
