I have a question for the brits. Why do you pronounce aluminum as aluminium? There is no "i" after the n and adding one in makes it sound like a radioactive isotope ( which it isn't BTW).

As far brit humor Monty Python would be at the top of my list. If I had my way every thread would be required to have a dead parrot skit embedded in it. At the end of the thread there should be the fish slap dance as a fitting conclusion.

As you don't have NHS, what happens if a sick child was in a medical emergency, is there a charity that covers them or will treatment sometimes get withheld if there is no insurance?

You'll get every answer from 'pay for it yourself' to 'you can't be turned away'....the bottom line is that you can be turned away depending on whether or not the hospital deems the situation to be a medical emergency and/or that hospital doesn't take your insurance. People in families making 20,000 a year are turned down in some States so 'charity' all depends on where you live and what's available. Bottom line is you go to the emergency and hope they take you. If they do and you don't have coverage for your child, and you are above the rate set by the government (which is very low), then you must pay. If you can't, then it will go to a collection agency who will hound you whenever and wherever you can. If the bill is not too bad - say a few thousand - you can work with them to make payments and cross your fingers you or the kid don't get sick while that bill is being paid off because the next one will be added on to that one and so it will go on.

My mother in law just got her ambulance bill - $1200.00 for taking her 13 miles....that must also be paid. A lot of people are using their credit cards to pay for their medical bills but there are some plans underfoot in the government to turn health care into a right and not a privilege which will in effect change the way the whole system operates. sammieswife.

Coronation Street is broadcast in Canada, and in US border towns. We are about 9 months behind. Tracy Barlow has yet to kill her bf. Sometimes silly, but always interesting. Currently on the show, it's Christmas '06 . Anything with Rowan Atkinson is good as well.

My favourite all time Brit show.....I miss it ....sammieswife

There was a chain called Arthur Treacher's that sold fish and chips. I don't know if they are still around.

Not only are they still around, but they're offering franchises. Wanna buy one?

Actually some of the postings are not entirely correct to my understanding of federal laws. Any hospital with an "Emergency Room" (A&E to the Brits) that accepts federal insurance program payments must provide a medical screening exam. If during that exam it is discovered the patient has a life threatening emergency (or is in active labor) occuring at that moment, they cannot refuse to provide the care based on ability to pay.

That is one part of the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act). A private hospital that does not accept government payments for emergency services can choose to do what it wishes.

The fines for violating those rules are very stiff.

    Cheers!

    Hey Sammilee

Just a comment on the ambulance bill. The reason those bills are so high is because Medicare does not pay enough. The costs have to be covered somewhere so the insured and private paying persons have to cover a disproportionate share of the expense.

    Favorite show?

Well, I still love Doctor who! But BBCA JUST got Top Gear. I'd heard about this ages ago from an aussie friend, and he loves it. I watched it, and despite having no love for cars, I love this show.

    Favorite English accent?

Well...I have to admit....I don't know the names :P . I believe it's called Cockney. The one where they say "'Ello, guvnah!"
