Terry, various religions has done that to a lot of people from different backgrounds, not just Bobby Fischer. Whatever drove him into what he ended up as does not take away from his ability to marvel the Chess world in his day. At the height of his game he surpassed and amazed all the Grandmasters with his unique style of play even as a child prodigy. Way before religion fried his brain.

Fischer could have single-handedly (he almost did) catapulted chess into a status that would erase the "geek" connotation.
So many young people were drawn to chess because of Iceland.
But, his weirdness and dropping out ruined it.
Sad to say.
