That's an amazing picture.
My familiarity with photography was preventing me from "getting" it. The flat terrain they are walking across makes the shadows seem unreal. I'm not sure I would have figured it out w/o clicking on the higher rez image link Leolaia posted.

Sweetface 2233, It would be good to know what time of day this photographer snapped this picture. Was it in the early morning or late afternoon? He truly was in the right place at the right time. Mr. Steinmetz needs a pat on the back for having the presents of mind to snap this one. Great Shot Thanks for posting
