They were talking about how when you are in a cult, you are not allowed to think outside their 'box'. I didn't say anything and she says "That sounds just like the JW's doesn't it?". I just smiled and said yes...I was thinking that very thought but wasn't going to say anything. She said "I'm not like that." I agreed and told her that she was a 'On the fence JW" and she agreed and said that's what she would continue to be. I just wonder if the powers that be will let her.
My JW roommate and I were watching a program on cults the other night

As long as she keeps her thoughts to herself, they will leave her alone.
Unless there are any obvious signs of lack of total committment to the org, such as regularly missing meetings, not going in field service, publicly critcising or complaining about the org, etc, the elders tend not to notice those who are having doubts. If they have a suspicion that she isn't fully committed though, they will be on her case, have no doubts about that.

I think it was the Biography channel...I caught the tail end of it. I'm sure it'll be on again soon. Just looked at their channel line up and it doesn't show it...maybe it was Nat'l Geographic or Discover. I know that I watch those channels a lot and it was on the other night. Yes the JW's are like a cult.

I know seeing a TV show about cults is what gave me the courage to look behind the curtain so to speak . I was not happy as a witness ,but always blamed myself for having lack of faith . Watching that show and realizing that my religion had many of the same traits as this cult helped me see it was okay to doubt and ask questions. The main point that struck me was the cultists they were interviewing had a huge fear of being destroyed at Armeggedon, and were also afraid if they left how they would live after being shunned by all their family and friends.
Right after watching that show I started posting here ,and I ordered Crisis of Conscience .

I remember the stock JW answer about people who were "on the fence."
"You know who owns the fence don't you? Satan!"
Yuck....
