Did you ever hear of an ERECTION that indicated leukemia? Seriously....

    Playing golf today with my sister she tells her bosses son - he is 28 yrs old. He awoke one morning last week with an erection. Not uncommon among those in that age bracket. But it persisted. He went to work, and it persisted. He was in pain all day, but it persisited. Finally -after returning home, and continued pain, he went to the ER.

    He had, by this time, had a full erection for 17 hours. The ER staff had to 'drain' his penis of the engorged blood. They tested the blood and found it to be leukemia. He was told that another 3 hours would have required AMPUTATION. This form of leukemia will force him to have chemo for the balance of his life - there is no cure. With chemo he might live 20 years they said - but it would eventually kill him. He has to avoid contact with illness - he won't be able to work due a compromised immune system.

    If she hadn't told me this story I would be writing it off as 'Urban Legend'.

    A google search for 'leukemia erection' gave me hundreds of hits - here is one of them that confirms this presentation of leukemia;

    Anyone ever hear of such a thing?

    I'm sure my Dad has. I'm not surprised that sickle cell anemia causes this, as the red blood cells are abnormally shaped and interfere with circulation. He needs to see an oncologist (cancer specialist) ASAP to talk about treatment options. AML is treatable, see my post "fifty years ago today," but he needs to see a specialist about it.

    The amputation has nothing to do with leukemia. Blood doesn't circulate normally in an erect penis, which means the tissue will die if he stays that way too long. The result is gangrene.

    Correct - I was not clear in my post on that point. The potential amputation was indeed due to the extended [no pun intended here] priapism.

    That's a sad story...I feel for him...I had a friend/colleague who died a few years ago -- suddenly -- because he had undetected leukemia. He was well one week and dead the next. It was a huge shock. I'm glad at least he got a warning sign that the doctors were able to catch and start treating...

    Wow, Leo.

    I didn't realize you could walk around with something like that with no idea.

    I understand that Sickle Cell Anemia can create the same indications also.

    the commercials for the pills on tv warn about erections lasting longer than 4 hours...with good reason, as was mentioned..
