Censorship, when to apply it?

Kathy Griffin won an emmy award for her reality show " My life on the D list." In her speech, Griffin said that a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.

She went on to hold up her emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim,"This award is my god now!"

She joked that an award would move her to the C - List. She was right "C" as in censured.

The TV Academy said that her raucous acceptance speech will be edited when the event, which was taped, is shown this Saturday on the E!

Do you agree with the TV Academy? How far is too far? I have not seen or heard her on the emmy awards show.

I do believe that these awards show should be about accepting the awards for the talent that your peers have recognized about you. Political and religious remarks should be restrained or respectfully kept at a minimun without offending what others believe got them where they are in the business. I.E. I want to thank The Lord, Jesus, God, Allah for this award.

At the same time when is censorship to be applied?

I think the TV Academy has the right to edit out off-color remarks.

As for the rest of her speech, I would hope they just show it and let the public be the judge. I agree with Kathy's general idea that this "thank Jesus" thing is overdone at award shows. "Thank Jesus" would be more appropriate at some Christian music awards ceremony.

Any private non-government entity can censor whatever they want to. The US laws only forbid government censorship and even that has a few limitations. You can't threaten the president, yell fire in a movie theater, lie to the cops or make phony 911 calls.

But we also get so uptight about our rights that most of us forget our obligations to our fellow humans. Words can cause problems and incite hatred and fear with people. You can say what you want but most people are not very good at taking the heat for doing so.

I hate to see references to sex on hats and t-shirts.

Y ou know the type - Free Mustache Rides - that sort of thing.

If someone wants to wear something like that to a strip bar, I think it's disgusting, but no problem, it's your right.

But at Cedar Point or Disney Land? With the kiddies?

    Don't I have rights too?

never...censorship is never acceptable to me..I would rather read, see, or hear something that was offensive to me than to know that someone wasn't able to express themselves in a way that was right and comfortable for them.

As far as wearing tee-shirts that have profanity printed on them, malls where families go to eat and shop have standards of conduct that do not allow it. The reason is that malls are privately owned and shoppers are guests on private property that is open to the public. This is not censorship, it is a standard of conduct expected of all who visit these malls.

The wts has enjoined its members from private research and wts analysis and also from certain internet activities. Is this also a form of censorship?

So, A&W, I take it you wouldn't approve of this attire at Disneyworld? ;-)

I don't really agree with removing that particular comment out (except the curse words).

However, I would probably make the same decision if I was them. TV is a business whose purpose is to make money. If the corporation believes this particular comment would alienate viewers and cause them to lose money, it makes good fiscal sense to cut it out.

john doe, that picture was taken here. lol

    as for this comment:

even if it's child pornography? or the advocation of such. there are websites that try to do this. should they be protected?

anyone that knows me, knows i hate censhorship. it drives me nuts. but, it is needed in SOME cases. true, it's hard to know where to draw the line, but, some things are just obvious.
