metapsy brought up a good point in one of his/her replies to a post earlier.(sorry metapsy,am still new here)

i have done more studying on the witnesses now that i'm out than i ever did while i was in!!!

which one of you here can't wait until the new WT, awake, KM, new book or brochure arrives and devour it. whereas before you couldn't be bothered?

i feel like beyond that first wave of excitement (however long it is for individul JWs) the interest wears out. then you don't really read with interest or critical thinking anymore since from you started studying you've been coaxed to not show your independent view but have that of the watchtower.
... before you know it we don't read things critically anymore, don't read them almost at all and just stay because we think we should but have a total lack of interest, we just regurgitate what we heard........

(a respected elder i knew said during one of his sunday talks "when you come to the meetings how much new stuff do you learn? it's basically the same 3 or 4 things said over and over again"......TRUE!!!! his point was it's the way we look at those couple of things from a different perspective that shows true studying and leads to deep understanding....... *disgusted grimace on face*)

I used to be the nerd who studied every book I could for the weekly meeting despite working 8 hours a day and 2 hours of service almost every day.

I don't touch a darn thing now. I have all the books and only reference it when my boyfriend/netbuddies asks me the odd question, and I need better words than I can normally supply.

Since I've been out the Borg for some 30 yrs. now, for the reason I smelled a rat , but now with the open door of the inter-net available I've gained

knowledge of the JWS. of which of course only supports what I had suspecting way back then.

Sadly one thing that I discovered through talking to people here and elsewhere is how much the JWS had damaged their lives and is an example of how any religious cult

not only in an individual sense but also for the human family, for all which we belong to.

I have no desire to read the material from the Society.

Reading their publications was like talking to a lawyer. "ok, I just finished the three pages on the bible's view on XYZ matter, yet I still haven't gotten a straight answer"

I love how the Young People Ask articles would try to address complex issues like "why do I cut myself" and spend the whole article talking about nothing and not truly offering any sound advice.

younglove i totally agree. so many times i asked myself .....are these people psycologists, are they doctors, counselors....they write about things they have no idea about.

answer the WT would never give:
    why do i cut myself?
you may have psychological issues which is aggravated by the fact that you're in a cult.

i don't think they are the root of all problems but they certainly don't make things better..most times.

I told my JW friend last week to discontinue offering me literature altogether, but a few days ago he tried again. Much of the stories were interesting, but the religious doctrine was opposite of what I personally believe.

However it's really interesting to note the emotions brought forth in the mostly interesting stories here. Some are depressing about the loss of family due to shunning. It's heartbreaking to read the childishness goings on with those who practice this. Even though my parents were totally screwed up, I always wanted to know they loved me. To those who are suffering, I wish all here suffering, better times down the road.

I think this is because it's easier to work against the Tower than for it.

    (1) You read the literature, and instead of conforming your life to it, you rip it apart and bash it (or puke). You do not have to worry about what they are going to ban next. If anything, you are glad you don't have to give up something (like what happens when/if coffee is banned. You do not have to give it up; you may, however, feel bad for any family that is still in and have to give it up. You might also puke.

    (2) It is easier to post from the comfort of your home than to go door to door. You do not have to worry about messing up your presentation, which has to be repeated each time. There are no dogs to attack you. No traffic to dodge. No paying for gas and vehicle wear and tear. No dressing up in that hot suit when it is broiling hot or bare legs in 40 below weather. No worrying about peeing your pants at the door because they wouldn't give you a break. No hounding if you fail to turn in sufficient time for the month. No fast, good tasting poison because you are trying to keep your time going. Typing is so much easier than knocking on door bells or door frames.
