How does all of this work. I read a 74 watchtower that says you can talk to your Dfed relatives and its your decision. Yet I hear that the current understanding is you cannot.

Can I bring up an old article to my mother about talking to me or does a new one trump the old???

You can bring it up to her to show the hypocricy of "God's only channel" with true religion today...But new light trumps old light...

I am afraid so as far as elders go. I think I mentioned the earlier stuff in another thread you mentioned this in. What issue WT is the New Light on this delightful subject.

    thanks....oompa

You may want to show her this interesting article in the Watchtower...

    Watchtower February 1881 p.188

If we were following a man undoubtedly it would be different

with us; undoubtedly one human idea would contradict another

and that which was light one or two or six years ago would be

regarded as darkness now: But with God there is no

    variableness, neither shadow of turning, and so it is with truth;

any knowledge or light coming from God must be like its

author. A new view of truth never can contradict a former truth.

"New light" never extinguishes older "light," but adds to it. If

you were lighting up a building containing seven gas jets you

would not extinguish one every time you lighted another, but

would add one light to another and they would be in harmony

and thus give increase of light: So is it with the light of truth; the

true increase is by adding to, not by substituting one for another.

Yeah, the new trumps the old. So the '74 WT Trumps the '68, and the '81 trumps that one, and the 2006 trumps the '81, even though it might say the same thing as the original 1968 WT!

The WT's stance on this issue has changed several times in varying shades. You can talk to them if there's family business to attend to....no you can't talk to them at all....it's up to your conscience.....it's a disfellowshipping offense if you associate with them....on and on ad nauseam.

Here's what I would do. I would get three or four Wacktowers and open each one and say, "It's okay....no wait, here's another. It's not okay....Oh wait, it's okay on Mondays and Wednesdays every third year....oh wait, this year it's okay, but last year it wasn't. What do you think, Mother?"

But otherwise, yes. A new QFR (or a new answer in any
WT article or other WT literature) that changes the answer
    trumps an old answer.

Elders are expected to know how to research and find the
latest answer. Some questions involve going back decades
    and others involve recent articles.

New light trumps old light, until they change it back to new light again. Either way, It has always been the truth.

Give me a Darvocet, this is giving me a logic headache!

So there is a 99.9999999999 percent chance that she will completely blow the older article off as "old light".

Even one of our Kingdom songs refers to "present truth" implying that there was "former truth."
