I theorize that the reason Rutherford could get away with so much was that much of his reign of terror was during the 1930's during the height of the depression. Most of those brothers found at home at Bethel and had no place to go if they did resign. It might also have been an era when generally people were more compliant to authority than they are now. People weren't as inclined to broadcast the faults of their leaders.

I agree with bonnie/clyde most Witnesses of that era were kept poor due to the truth and had no choice. Someone published a Macmillan letter on this site in which he tells how he "has no money" at the time.

"In 1974 I was invited to become a member of the Governing Body...I NEEDED ENCOURAGEMENT TO ACCEPT IT."
He goes on to say Fredrick Franz "encouraged" him to accept and he did. Lots of pressure at Bethel to "do the right thing."
An enlightening glimpse giving insight into the life of a human being who was part of a group believed by millions worldwide to be the ONLY source of information from the CREATOR OF ALL THAT EXISTS!

Even in the Congs. this pressure is used. My best friend quit Pioneering before me to get some more education/better job. and my Pioneer partner was "Gonna have a serious chat with him." I thought it was his own private bissness. People put the pressure on and call it "Encouragement."
