Files from the 1970's by request! Request from researcher: I am new to the board but I remember the 1975 disaster very well. I am looking for some pamphlets and tracts that were from the era of the 1970's, and would appreciate some help. First, a letter that was written by a Presiding Overseer in 1976 and mailed to thousands of Kingdom Halls. It was one of the first major "apostasy" movements after the failure of the 1975 prediction, as it revealed there was a network of questioning JW's. Second, a booklet called, "The Scholastic Dishonesty of the Watchtower" which was published the same year. It's been out of print for 25 years! Third, an old tract from the 70's that was printed with an imitation style of Witness magazines of that era entitled "Watch Out!" It was distributed at a JW convention in Phoenix in 1975 and then was sent out by the thousands for others to distribute. I would really like to have those if you can help me! Thanks a lot! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My comments: Welcome to the group! It is always good to hear from new ones and we hope that others who haven't posted will follow your example. If I remember correctly, the tract you speak of, "Watch Out" was done so well that it looked like it came from the Watchtower's press. Sure, I'll dig through the files and see if I have those for you. I will provide you with download links tomorrow. Cheers! Atlantis! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The download instructions will be the same for all three files. Click the links below and when the next page appears scroll down to the bottom of the page where a small (red arrow) points to the download link. 1. Atlantis, I'm going to give you a challenge just to see how GOOD you are:

In the late-70s/early-80s a non WTB&TS book was published about WHY THE WTB&TS IS NOT A FALSE PROPHET.

    Can you get that one?

    Thanks, Atlantis, for posting these!

These bring back many memories for me. I was at that 1975 Assembly in Phoenix when this tract was dated. At the time I was a Bethelite and had come to the Phoenix convention because that was where my parents had moved. I remember seeing the fellow outside the North entrance of the Veterans' Memorial Coliseum thinking how this guy had to be really mixed up to oppose the Witnesses.

Less than a year later I had left Bethel and I was visiting Phoenix and saw he had a recorded phone message for JWs. Out of curiosity I called it and I remember hearing about the Presiding Overseer who had resigned from the Witnesses and found out he was the one who had sent out the letter to all those Kingdom Halls. I was still supressing my doubts but to this day I can still remember these experiences.

It wasn't until the beginning of 1980 that I actually started facing my doubts and began the re-evaluation of my beliefs as a JW. One of the first things I read was Van Buskirk's The Scholastic Dishonesty of the Watchtower. I remember it made a big impact on my thinking. I thought the section on "The Faithful and Wise Servant" was particularly well done. I had always thought that the idea that Russell was the Faithful and Wise Servant had arisen after his death out of a debt of gratitude to his work. I never realized how it was promoted for many years while Russell was still alive. That made the claim in the book God's Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached (1973) that Russell never claimed to be the Faithful and Wise Servant grossly misleading...actually false. I was now living in Phoenix and I contacted the fellow who had put together that "Watch Out" tract and had started the phone message line and got further information. I resigned from the Witnesses myself in August of 1980.

Nathan Natas: Thank you my friend! We appreciate your info too! (See comments below) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Yknot: Thank you for the kind words! We enjoy your participation. ---------------------------------------------------------------- AlphaOmega: Appreciate your kindness and thank you for the rare files you have been sharing! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Nathan Natas:

    My comments:

Is this the title of the book Nathan? (Why The WTB&TS Is Not A False Prophet) Could you narrow the year down a little? Was the author related to Johannes Greber? (Just kidding)

I will do my best! A few more specifics would be helpful!

I am locked in PDF right now scanning a very-very-rare book by M. L. McPhail, published in 1909 which many people thought that McPhail only wrote "songbooks" however, he wrote booklets, books, and articles also. This one is 117 pages where McPhail slams Russell's new covenant doctrines and rips Russell a new one, (if you get my meaning.)

You might be able to use this rare book to help Simon with some donations. When I get done with it, you can have it if you think you can use it to help Simon out!

    Nathan,

I think the book you're looking for was "Jehovah's Witnesses are Not False Prophets" by Jay Hess. It's mentioned on this JW page:

    http://www.theocraticlibrary.com/

Ironically, Hess is no longer a JW. His testimony can be found here:

    http://www.culthelp.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1003&Itemid=15

I used to have a copy of Hess' book. I'm not sure if I still have it, however. We lost a few materials in a fire about 6 years ago and it may have been in the stuff we lost. I'll check.
