Sounds like the announcement from the platform was overstepping the specific edicts of the TalmudTower. Although, if the party was as wild as what I described above, I doubt the CO would have a problem with the announcement. Otherwise, sounds like you've got yourself a regular "Adolf" on your hands.

I started a thread a week ago (roughly) about how congregations in my area got the "clamp down" about 10-12 years ago, but then in the last 4 or 5 years, big congregation "events" have been happening right and left. And I'm not just talking weddings and going away parties.

These are officially discouraged by Brooklyn, but I think the (relatively) liberal California elders realize they're a healthy social outlet. At the REALLY big ones, there's no booze. At the smaller ones, 15-30 people, booze often flows freely. No one's fallen down yet and no spouses have been traded. (That I'm aware of.)

All it will take is a new CO with a stick up his butt to put an end to them though. Time will tell.

I have mixed feelings about them. If they end up getting shut down, that will just be one more nail in the WT coffin in my family's eyes. So I'm half-way hoping for a new dictator to come in and clean house.

His attitude was just typical of someone who didn't want the responsibilty, who actually LACKED the responsibility and above all, who has NO LOVE for his Bros's & Sis's, otherwise...HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE TO HELP OUT. What an A***** he is.

Clam reminds me of a friend who was going to a "vicars and tarts" party but after getting dressed for it...they never left the bedroom!

Wow. The more things change... the more they stay the same.

As a teenager, I remember my older sisters and mom organizing a 'folk dance party'. For those who may not know, this was a dance - where older style dances were performed - with audience participation. Arms-length dancing. Virginia reel, polka, waltz, amid other similar dances. Lots of exercise, too.

My mom paid for a public place - so that a lot of folks could come. They did. About 100 were there, including one of the 'elders' (although in those days, they weren't called 'elders') - who had a blast - and even danced a few dances.

Refreshments were served - ice cold water, and soda pops. She had even hired an off-duty cop to watch the parking lot - and keep folks inside - if they wandered out. They didn't. The off-duty cop had nothing to do - so frequently came inside and munched cookies and drank pop.

Anyway... the lead nazi - heard about it - and when my mom scheduled another one - about a couple of months later, he - and his followers - called her and my sisters on the carpet. Read her the riot act. Can't have large gatherings. What if something happened. She would be responsible. Even afterwards - if someone got into trouble - her fault. Etc.

My mom and older sisters did research - from the publications. They wrote a letter to Brooklyn, asking if it was allowable to hold parties like they were doing. They gave all sorts of publication references in their letter making it easy for the folks in Brooklyn - so they wouldn't have to repeat the research. They got a letter back from Brooklyn, basically saying it was okay.

My mom then 'called a meeting' with the nazi head-honcho, and his minions. Had them over to our house one evening, where she laid out the letter and let them read it. Head nazi was infuriated. She had gone over his head. Made him look like a jack-ass.

He laid down all sorts of 'rules' that she would have to do - I don't recall what they were. It isn't important.

Anyway... long story short - the next party that was held - was boycotted. Not very many folks showed up. Someone had put the word out, I suppose - although it wasn't announced publicly.

So... yeah. Been there... done that. The year? 1972 or 1973.
