It can I suppose be about the insecurity of the converter, but I think more often it's an altruistic urge. Atheists in my experience want humanity to stop stunting itself with what they believe to be a nonsensical anachronism. The negative iimpact of religion is after all very evident. Believers on the other hand usually have their instruction book which tells them that their god requires urgent conversion. Both sets feel as though they are doing their duty, for want of a better word.
Should We Really Try to Change Others?

I agree, often people are ultruistic. There are many reasons why. Some people just like to fix things, whether a broken door, or a broken spirit.

Thanks to all who replied to this. I sometimes worry that a person is where they are supposed to be for their
own self evolution. Perhaps "Life" has handed them their assignment and lessons to learn, and by interferring
we (for lack of a better phrase) violate the Prime Directive. This is just something that sometimes concerns me,
especially when I get very verbal in trying to "change" the way someone thinks...like my JW sister. What if
she is exactly where she is supposed to be in order to learn the things she needs in THIS lifetime. I apologize
if this sounds weird or doesn't make sense to you.

I tend to agree w that, journey-on. People subconsciously do things to get them to where they are, so can experience whatever they need to experience for their growth, at least in many cases. It doesn't mean that they mean to be there forever, though. When it is time, we can be standing there to give them what they need to further their development.
For instance, both of my sisters are jw. One of them will talk to me, sometimes. However, i have not tried to get her out. I only attack the wt crap if she brings it up. She can see that i am doing quite well, considering what i have been through. I think that, one day, she will probably extend a questing hand outside of the wt fantasy. I am ready to give her any information that she may need to help her to see, ready to listen, ready to pose the needed question to her to direct her thoughts in the appropriate direction. I will only do this when i think it is the right time.

Correcting child or making a child do something is not the same as making an adult change. The world of full of people that are happy to change adults not children. What they find out is something like this; a policeman sit along side the road waiting of speeders everyone can see his car so they all do what?
Once he is out of sight the all go back to speeding. Nothing changes in reality, but for that brief moment out of fear. Fear changes people for a moment. So how does one assume the right over another person will and call that change unless it really for self?
Every person that a part of a group has to comform to the group willingly or unwillingly to be a part of that group. But if the group no longer exist for the person will they have made lasting change or will they keep that change?
Families have the same problems force parent make the child obey the rules once the child is on their own, that is, an adult and have their own family they most often do things differently then their parents.
However, when a person make a change of their own will because it benefits them it becomes part of them - big differents. People that can't be happy unless they are changing the world are never happy they spend a life time forcing other to have their point of view and if they weren't so self-center they realize they are nothing more then a policman in plain sight!

Live and let live.
Ask questions, answer the questions of others. Share information. Listen, learn, grow.
Leave the decisions to the individual, and respect those desicions.
Discuss, don't attack.

All arguments are variations on "I am right, you are wrong." That is why I like to remind myself sometimes that it is possible that EVERYBODY has it wrong, including of course, myself. It's possible that life is just a mytery we'll never understand, and there is no hope of finding out the truth in the future. This may not be a warm fuzzy belief, but it is just as likely to be true as any other theory. That is why I say to Creationists that just because evolution is totally wrong, it doesn't mean that creation is right. It may be that both of them are wrong.

I think God evolved.
Then He died.
But we all have God particles in us.
Except for conservatives, of course.
And most Canadian beer is really not Canadian.
