One Wasted Night

Once, when I was studying, my upline moved out of the territory. He suggested that it would be good if I stayed one night at his new apartment, at which he worked as manager (and maintenance person). So I accepted the invitation.

Turns out that I spent the better part of the afternoon working alongside him on a project, so he could get back out in field circus. He was doing some painting in one of the halls. This took the better part of that afternoon (thankfully--painting is better than field circus). We had hot dogs for supper (sounds nutritious?), Then it was time for the book study, which was conducted in someone's living room. They had tiny folding chairs, about the size of the ones in first grade. Those chairs were made for children. I would have laughed if I would have sat in one of them and busted it (and I'm not even all that fat--just the normal 180 pounds when I should be closer to 145).

From there, we headed back home. He played one of those Bible drama tapes to sleep to (what a thing to listen to on the way to sleep--a death threat). It was not comfortable there. We got maybe 6 hours of sleep before it was time to go out in field circus again.

Next morning, I got up. We went out in street work for a few hours, and all my upline could think of was placing enough magazines to recoup enough for a cup of coffee (that was back in the days when you got to keep the money received from placing the rags). We spent the whole morning after that going from door to door in field circus. After that, I got dropped back home.

This has to rank as one of the biggest wastes of a day off from work ever. All that time, and I spent maybe 5 or 6 hours of it in field circus. Besides helping someone get a painting project finished on schedule so he could squander time in field circus. I don't even remember what the book study was about, aside the wretched chairs that were made for small children. In retrospect, I would have been better off spending the time sick in bed. At least that way I wouldn't have had a share in spreading a scam that is ruining so many lives. Better would have been to have spent the day in the arcade. At least that would have only cost me money, and likely not all that much.

If only this forum could have a way to run back into the 1980s! I would have liked to have looked up people's experiences before joining, from an objective viewpoint.

We all had many wasted days in the many decades we were in the borg.

    So glad we woke up.

Not only did you supply free labor, I would bet he was "counting time" every minute he was with you. You were a pioneer's dream come true!

WhoaWhoaWhoa, what do you mean back in the day when you could keep the donations? What was the reasoning behind that back then? That you were all "ministers" so that was your compensation. Jeez....these folks are, well, strange.

Back in the day, you paid for your magazines and books up front. Magazines were like 4 cents and you sold them for a nickle a piece.

It may have been a waste of time for you but your up line manager was able to book at least 15 hours of fs time for those two days.

Which is probably why he did that. At that time I was an unbaptized publisher, and he was trying to inflate his time in field circus.

I wonder what he is going to do if he sees the Christmas tree lit in my window.

It's a multi-level marketing (or, "pyramid scheme") term. The person who recruits you is your upline. Any people you recruit are your downline.
