One principle to which I try to adhere, (not always successfully) comes from basic child psychology 101:
DON'T LABEL THE PERSON, LABEL THE BEHAVIOR.
There is a world of difference between calling someone "stupid" and saying that they "behaved stupidly."
By the way, this does not apply to trolls or mean people, they will still get both barrells.
