I, along with many of you, signed up nearly 5 years ago for the nationwide "do not call" list, where telephone solicitors are bound by law (here in the U.S.) to respect. Okay, there have been a few violators who've called us but on the most part, we've not been bothered during treasured moments -- especially dinnertime.

After the first of the coming year we'll need to freshen our enrollment at it is only valid for 5 years.

Perhaps it's time for us (U.S.) to begin to hound our U.S. representatives and senators that we also want a "do not knock" list enacted and honored.

We could fill out some online form that could explicitly exclude All or Some sales and religious solicitors -- something like this:

All sales and religious organizations who are engaged in house-to-house activity would be bound by law to first check the do-not-knock list. If the subject's address is listed along with their group's name -- that address is off-limits. Like the telephone list, it could be valid for a period of five years. I think that's fair.

A national "do not knock" list is nothing new. Check out this Google search where there are more than 16,000 hits on the terms:

    "do not knock" door ~national

That tells me there is some sympathy for such a movement which could help this issue come to a head.

In recent years two trusting professors (husband and wife) in a New England town were brutally murdered by two boys who went door to door conducting a phoney survey. I also read about an elderly person who was murdered by a magazine salesperson.

They should institute this ban in the U.S. because things have gotten out of hand with the crime element and the fraud element.

Many door to door salespersons are rip-off artists targeting the elderly with every scam imaginable under the sun. Sadly, most of these rip-off artists are young people who seem educated and trustworthy who themselves have been set up by unscrupulous companies and are pressured to do the same.

I am sorry for anybody who has to go door to door and sell anything because I would never buy anything from them.

While I'm not a fan of JWs... This is ridiculous!

This is just the State trying to play "father knows best", socialism, the State can do a better job at your personal decision nonsense bull-hocky-crap-o-la

Most old people are spry, witty, and smart. I know retired judges, lawyers, doctors, mechanics, school teachers, etc. I see & interact with them every single day. These people are my clients and my neighbors. We don't need to shut them out of our society, but to listen to their wisdom & stories.

If an elderly person has lost his mind or makes a string ofcrazy financial decisions, then the State or the family should appoint a legal guardian over all or part of their lives.

But, if the elderly has his faculties, then he should participate with the full right to slam the door on the Girl Scouts, JWs, etc. Old people are lonely enough. Now, let's tell them that they can't have any visitors.

Imagine Franz or Barbara being told that they are not wise enough to handle visitors at their doors. I can hear Barbara bitchin' now.

Shouldn't the State being running an ad campaign telling the children & grandchildren to spend more time with grandma & grandpa?

Isn't the root of the problem that the elderly are lonely? Lonely leads to depression...leads to illness...leads to death. Perhaps the State is trying to off old people with this isolation rule.

    We all have rights,

People want the right to come to my door,

I want the have a right to keep them away.

I put myself on a Do Not Call list when I was a courier. It was a company cell phone, used for business only and when I got a call on it for urgent business mostly. Since my work directly effected getting things to and fro for medical patients in a timely manner and sometimes for emergencies, pesky telephone soliciting was horrible.

I would love to be put on a Do not Knock list as well. Most people that are selling something are so excited to finally get someone at home they don't know when to shut up. We can all relate to this as door knockers ourselves. I have politely answered a door and told someone I was busy or sick, and could not get them to leave.

Being a single woman, I dont want people coming down my driveway to my door. Im sorry it has gotten this way, I was not always like this.

I actually was found door to door 25 years ago!!!!
