Well I was sitting here about 1 hour ago, surfing the net, and the doorbell rang. That in itself is freaky enough, considering it was early in the morning, and as we have had alot of car burlaries here at the apartment complex, and I thought that maybe my car was hit and someone was here to tell me about it.
I asked who it was and he said "it's your neighbor", so I reluctantly opened the door ever so slowly and there was this young white guy in his 20's. He said he was my neighbor, and I said "I have never seen you around here". He said "My mom lives across the way" and pointed to the apartments across the sidewalk. There are 4 apartments there. One is inhabited by a black family, one is a couple in their 30's with a small child, the other is an officer that I work with. There is one more, but Im pretty sure that young people live there too I dont know of any woman across the way that could be his mom.
Anyway he gave some cockamamey story about his mom was just in a wreck, and the tire blew out, and asked to use the phone. I went and got the cordless phone and he had some trouble using it, he kept hanging up "accidently" and finally he gave up, then asked me if I could go help change the tire.
By this time he is acting really strange, and Im starting to get worried and pissed too (he interrupted my surfing). I said "No, I dont buy that". He mumbles something and then heads down the steps.
I debated whether or not to call the police, I even second guessed myself if I should have been more helpful to him, but then I finally decided that he was probably up to no good.
I called the city police and they said they would send someone out to patrol around the area, so far I havent seen any police car.
I dont know what this guy was up to, perhaps he thought he would find a woman alone or something.
I'll tell you one thing, one false move out of him and I would have knocked his head clean off his shoulders. I think he sensed that from me too, as he seemed very nervous.
Well that was my weird incident of the night.
A freaky incident just happened

You were right to be suspicious, J-G. The other thing is, he could have been carrying a knife or gun, so I hope the cops nab the guy.
Hope you're ok.

Best to err on the side of caution these days JG. What time in Tennessee did this happen?

Yeah, Im OK. It just makes me wonder what he was up to. There are several scenarios that played through my head.
1. He was looking to get inside my apartment to see what I had to steal.
2. If I offered to go help him, he could have tried to carjack me.
3. He was trying to find out if a woman lived here alone or something.
Whatever it was, it sure freaked me out.
I'll tell you, he picked the wrong guy if he thought I was going to be a victim. Im one pissed off XJW, with 36 years of pent up frustration.
I would have grabbed that gun (if he had one) and shoved it where the sun doesnt shine. -

The time was approximately 5:30 AM, and dark outside. Nobody in their right mind would knock on a strangers door that time of morning.

You did the right thing. I would take a walk after daylight to find out if he really is a neighbor.
And maybe mention it to some of your other neighbors so they can be on the look out.
We had something strange happen here last week.
Oz gets home from work and calls me to tell me that someone stole a tire off his jeep. ONE freaking tire and wheel. Why would someone steal one tire? The jeep was up on jacks so you would think they'd at least taken a set.

Maybe they had planned to take all four, but saw someone coming and were spooked.

You definitely did the right thing JG. I don't answer my door or my phone without appointment.

You did the right thing. He was up to no good.
Years ago i was staying with friends. They went to bed and I stayed up watching TV. It was about 2 am and the door bell rang. It wasn't my house, but i was curious so I looked out the peep hole and saw a young white male, shirtless. He rang the doorbell again. He then walked around to the back of the house. I went upstairs and oberved from a window. He knocked
on the back door. Then I saw that he went to the sliding doors at the rear of the house. By this time I knew I should wake my friends up. We ran downstairs and when we
got to the back of the house the guy had removed the screen and was trying to pry open the slider. My bud and I chased the guy down the street while his wife called the cops. When
we started chasing him a pick up truck parked on the street fired up and this guy jumped in the bed. The truck hauled it out of there.
I figured the guy rang the doorbell and knocked hard to see if anyone was home. When no one answered he must have thought the place was empty.
So, maybe your "guy" was trying the same thing.

It sounds like some kind of con artist with a scheme to get you out of the house and then an accomplice would break in while you wear away trying to help them fix their tyre. Quite ruthless and cynical really, exploiting someone's kindness.
