What? blueviceroy is gay, who knew? Relax j/k.
Sometimes, I get surprised when I find out someone is not gay. How wrong is that?

It's great. I don't see how it ruins the book in any way. Rowling knows her characters more than anyone else could. Also, she wasn't championing or trumpeting Dumbledore being gay - she was asked a question about him where acknowledging he is gay made sense.
Fascinating, actually.
I like the way that she has made her books a "prolonged argument for tolerance."
How brilliantly subversive!
Now I don't wonder as much why her fan base includes such a diverse age group.
Of all the kinds of religious prejudice, the one against gays is one of the hardest to understand. Why does anyone care, or want to control, who people have sex with? It's private, it ought to stay that way. I could be cruder about it, but I won't. As for J. K. Rowling, she's a master manipulator of people's feelings, a lot like Dickens. The books are over, but she has to keep us enthralled. After all, there are still some movies that will make money for her, so she has to keep interest stirred up. Declaring a position on Dumbledore's sex life was pointless, in my opinion. Now, to be fair, she wrote some damn good books. I just re-read them all and they were as enjoyable the second time around as the first time.

The books are over ...
I doubt that. She is young and this is as she has stated many times, just one story line.
I thought this was interesting from the BBC news: "But I am disappointed that she did not make Dumbledore's sexuality explicit in the Harry Potter book. Making it obvious would have sent a much more powerful message of understanding and acceptance." She didn't make anyone else's sexuality explicit, it wasn't that kind of book, so why make Dumbledore's sexuality explicit? It would have changed the nature of the book which was about the hero's journey, not about sexuality.
I suppose an underlying theme might be against repression of all sorts, though, no?
