I don't know if he'll do much research, he was never one to do much anyway. Raised as a Witness, he like most, has just done what he was told to do.
In short, it'll be easy for him to extracate his mind because it was never really intellectual for him. He's just an absolutely fun loving soul that wants to be free and is going where his heart takes him.

such a nice story - I keep hoping for that kind of thing to happen to me again. I've met a couple of people from long ago, and it was wonderful.

Believe me, it sure is a good thing he has you as a friend. If I had contact with just one good friend outside the org., it would be amazing how fast i'd be turning in my DAing letter.
