  A really good book, which was later turned into a 2-hour BBC documentary, is The Bible Unearthed by two eminent archaeologists, Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman (available from Amazon). You'll never look at the Bible (Hebrew Scriptures) the same way ever again.
